Conversations with Carly Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Thompson.

Carly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Yes! I have been a professional wedding and lifestyle photographer for five years now. It started as a hobby as a teenager, I loved taking amateur photos of my friends and nature, but never knew it would become anything more. In 2018, I was working at a church, and they needed someone to take photos for their social media accounts. That was the first time I picked up a professional DSLR camera. It was daunting at first, but I fell in love with capturing genuine moments and telling stories through pictures. That is when I decided I wanted to be a photographer, and I have only fallen more in love with it since. I officially started Carly Thompson Photography in 2020, and over the years I have captured everything from pregnancy announcements to memorial services. I have made memories with families, friends and businesses. But most of all, I have loved documenting weddings and elopements. There is nothing like telling a beautiful love story.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have definitely learned a lot along the way. I am self taught, so a lot of my journey has been trial and error. I’ve learned everything I know about lighting, composition, and editing from looking at what more experienced photographers do, and usually doing it wrong the first time. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has absolutely been worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding and lifestyle photographer. I specialize in documentary style, candid photography that tells your unique story through pictures. I am known for being your wedding day hype woman, taking digital photos that feel like film, and having quick turn-around times (because I’m always so excited to edit your photos). I am most proud of the continued relationships I have had with couples after their wedding days. Getting to watch their families grow and follow them through their lives’ biggest moments is my highest honor.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the diversity of settings and scenery that you can find in our area. From beaches and marshes to farms to downtown areas, there is no shortage of places to capture gorgeous photos in the Myrtle Beach area. If you want me to talk about what I dislike about the city, 501 traffic has definitely made me late to a session or two.
