Today we’d like to introduce you to Shai Carter.
Hi Shai, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am from Charleston S.C when I moved to Asheville N.C 28 years ago I was pregnant with my first child. I knew that I wanted a steady career and provide for my daughter so I went to McDowell tech in Marion N.C for cosmetology. I always enjoyed doing hair growing up so school did not seem hard. I graduated with honors, and started doing hair immediately . It was hard at first working minimum wage in a mall salon but I built my skills working with every type of hair and a variety of services. Within 2 years I became manager of a salon in Asheville N.C, within that time I also worked as a color educator for Joico and opened up my first salon in Asheville N.C Royal Haven, named after my first daughter. 25 years later I’m now in Greenville S.C and operate a small salon. Over the years I found that great, personal service is very important to the client. Listening to their stories and hair goals makes me want to provide a great experience. I have one assistant who helps me on my busy days and she provides excellent service too. I’ve worked in very chic salons, and big spaces. I’ve had up to 4 stylists in a shop but what sets me apart from everyone else is treating my clients the way I’d want to be treated in a salon. No matter what their social, or economic status they receive one on one VIP service every time. I believe it’s becoming a lost art in the beauty industry and I’d love to teach other artists how to make their clients feel special each time they walk in the door. My goal is to expand and train a couple of stylists under me and also offer wellness services in the beauty salon. I’ve learned that you never stop learning, and I still continue to strive for excellence in my business. My spiritual life and family gives me motivation to keep going.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There has been struggles in my business especially as a solo stylist. At times the work load can be overwhelming, constant text messages and phone calls that I handle myself. 2 years ago I hired an assistant who use to work with me in Asheville. She is a great help and makes my job a lot easier.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in every color service like balayage, highlights, lowlights, etc. I also specialize in haircuts, blowouts, chemical straightening services, natural hair care such as twist outs, big chop, ultra conditioning treatments, hair Botox. I try to stay up to date on what is trending in the beauty industry.
What are your plans for the future?
I look forward to expanding my salon and going into wellness. I am getting older so I feel it’s important for women to obtain self care practices. Last year I became a certified holistic wellness specialist. Teaching people about clean eating, breath work, grounding, meditation and other care work. I’d like to have a space where women can come and receive beauty services and learn how to take care of themselves holistically feeling beautiful and full from the inside out.
