Rising Stars: Meet Brett Gash of Pawleys Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Gash.

Hi Brett, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my DJ career in 1978 at Monmouth College in NJ as an on-air personality. After graduation, i began doing public and private events. I had one turntable, a box of 45 records and a radio shack speaker. My mom worked at a school and she had me DJ their dances. I graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. I went to work for the State of NJ as a Probation Officer. I also kept my hand in the DJ stuff for extra money landing a gig at a bowling alley in Trenton, NJ. After State cutbacks in 1983, The owner of the bowling alley offered my a job DJ at his club in Atlantic City, NJ. I worked there from 1983-1988. I returned to my probation job in 1988 and remained there until retirement in 2012. I met a DJ, Dave Hoeffel, now on Sirius XM. Dave ran a DJ company, SOUND CHOICE, and he started booking me for weddings. I continued working in various bars in NJ as well as doing many weddings and private events. My wife, Melissa, and I have one child, Amanda, she attended college at University of South Carolina.
We ended up moving here in 2018. I began doing sporadic DJ work locally in Pawleys Island, but also had to honor contracts in NJ so i did a lot of going back and forth.
Things basically came to a halt during Covid. I had an event at the Holiday Inn in Surfside Beach in December of 2018. I received a call to do NY Eve there from Wendy Foster. I have been employed at the Holiday Inn since that time. 2 years ago, Wendy’s daughter, Amber Drew Foster, began doing children’s games at the pool while I did the music. This past summer Amber Drew & Faith McNeil were the kids activity team all summer long. We had really cool themes and i tailored the music to fit the themes. We are planning on making this summer BIGGER & more successful that last summer.
I love what i do, I am fortunate, at my age, people still enjoy my presentation. It is important to know your audience. I always look to see the age group that i am playing for. I will always ask a potential client, how many guests and what are the ages are that i will be playing for.
My feeling that a wedding or event is for the couple or the people having it. It is THEIR DAY NOT MY SHOW. ALL my music is digitally edited and profanity is omitted by my music service.
I basically work by “word of mouth” i have never taken out ads in the yellow pages ( remember them) i do have a minimal website and Facebook page.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
i have been very lucky. I basically work by word of mouth

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I believe in giving back. If available i try and make myself available for many different causes.

What are your plans for the future?
I hope to continue doing this as long as i possibly can, it is not a job it is a passion. I look forward to seeing my grandchildren, Gabe, Jude and Margo grow up.
