Meet Marina Osborn of Organic Living and Wellness, llc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Osborn.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From the time I was about 7 years old I always knew I wanted to do some type of career in caring for others. I went through nursing school with the end-goal of becoming a nurse practitioner. I started nurse practitioner school in 2019 and was in the middle of doing rotations during the height of Covid and it was difficult to find providers willing to precept me due to Covid restrictions. I was fortunate enough to find a holistic practice that graciously agreed to help me, and this is where my eyes were opened to functional (root cause) medicine. During this rotation, I quickly realized that there is another side of healthcare that we don’t often see which is focused on discovering the root cause for ailments and correcting them through lifestyle, nutrition, and eliminating exposures to toxins and listening to and supporting the body’s natural processes. When I completed that rotation I moved through the rest of my rotations using a holistic lens, I would prescribe medications as needed but also was very passionate about exploring and treating the root cause of problems rather than solely using medications to mask symptoms. After I graduated I spent 3 years working in outpatient psychiatry and received additional certifications in complementary and integrative mental health. When I was finally ready to start my own practice I had to decide on a specific niche, so I chose to follow what I am most passionate about- gut healing, female hormone optimization and mental health. In my practice I utilize integrative medicine which is the blending of the use of medications when necessary but also a heavy focus in finding and treating the root cause of symptoms. Running a business while also being a mom and a wife has been one of the hardest but definitely most rewarding times of my life and I am eternally grateful for everyone who has supported my passion and helped me to get where I am today!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any business owner who has a totally smooth road must have won the lottery! The transition from working in a highly paid W2 position with benefits to taking a leap of faith and building my own business from the ground up was terrifying. There were so many nights I laid awake with my mind racing about if I was making the right decision or if this was too risky of a move. My husband is also self employed, and at the time we were living primarily on my income while he built his business, so me deciding to leave my salaried position was a scary thought! We were also going through infertility treatment and lost several pregnancies which added to the emotional toll during this transition. Some of the additional things I had to consider were things like how to hire employees and determine what legal paperwork is needed, how to do payroll, and how to automate daily tasks as much as possible, how to do marketing, and how to balance patient seeing time with admin time. When you work for someone else all of these things are already established, so I quickly learned that as a business owner I would wear a lot of hats day to day.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Organic Living and Wellness, llc?
Organic Living and Wellness, LLC is a holistic health practice that is located in Anderson, SC but offers virtual visits for patients across South Carolina. We help clients identify and treat the the underlying cause of many common ailments such as gastrointestinal issues, difficulty losing weight, menstrual irregularities, susceptibility to illness, frequent infections, and trouble sleeping. We utilize a client-centered approach and consider how psychosocial, environmental, and medical factors may affect symptoms.

Our approach is to identify and treat root-cause problems through thorough history and assessment, blood work, additional testing when warranted. We curate individual treatment plans that are specific for your needs and your goals, and they may include nutritional recommendations, lifestyle modifications, prescription medications or supplements.

Some of the expanded testing that we offer includes food sensitivity testing, comprehensive gut testing including the GI-Map, and GI-Effects; comprehensive hormone testing through DUTCH; Organic Acid testing, cortisol testing, mycotoxin (mold) testing, comprehensive bloodwork, and several types of genetic testing including testing for genetic predisposition for response to psychotropic medications through Genesight.

Since insurance is not usually accepted in many functional medicine practices many practices will use a membership model and charge a monthly premium to be a member, and some patients don’t prefer this model. I am proud to be able to offer a fee for service model where patients are only charged per visit. I understand the need for flexibility and offer in person visits at 2 locations along with virtual visits.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I am passionate about whole body care and I love to collaborate with other disciplines, including therapists, chiropractors, primary care providers, reproductive endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, acupuncturists, nutritionists, dietitians, massage therapists, and herbalists, and physical therapists. This is not a comprehensive list, but these are the first ones that come to mind with who I am often collaborating on care with. I am very receptive to collaboration and believe that the best patient care is provided when the different disciplines work as a team.
