Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Ward.
Hi Will, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started with an old laptop, I took it apart piece by piece just out of curiosity, and slowly, carefully put it all back together. That curiosity, along with time and patience, turned into something much more than just a skill. Before long, I became the “tech guy” in my family, and then friends, always ready to help fix any problem. My worked ranged from simple things like how to use an app to much bigger problems about managing servers or websites.
As my interest and knowledge grew, I decided to turn that passion into a business. My goal was to explore new opportunities, and to help others with their computers. I truly enjoy every type of tech problem people bring me, even ones I’ve never seen before because every job teaches me something new.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With my experience, it hasn’t always been a smooth road, especially when I was just starting out. In the beginning, it was all about getting my name out there. I didn’t have big shop or advertisements, just me, my tools, and word of mouth. Every job mattered, and sometimes I’d spend multiple hours figuring out something new just to make sure it was done right.
There were also a lot of hard challenges along the way of running this business. Things like pricing, scheduling, and keeping up with messages took a lot of time to get the hang of, but every step of the way taught me something amazing.
Over time, the community here in Mount Pleasant has really supported me, and that made all the difference. It’s been a long learning curve, but one I’m very thankful for.
We’ve been impressed with Will Ward IT, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is called Will Ward IT. I help with all kinds of tech problems, anything from slow computers to upgrades, data recovery, and one on one help learning how to use some devices. I work around Mount Pleasant, especially Dunes West and Park West, I offer in-person, remote, and mainly drop-off help depending on what’s easiest for the customer.
What I’m most known for is being patient and explaining things in plain English. A lot of my customers are elderly or not very tech-savvy, so I make sure they understand what I’m doing and why. I also take privacy seriously, I never touch or delete files without permission.
What sets me apart is how personal it is. It’s just me, so every job gets my full attention. I don’t rush or charge by the hour, I charge by the job so there are no surprises. Most of my work comes from referrals and returning customers.
At the end of the day, I just want people to feel comfortable with their computers again and know they have someone nearby they can trust to help them.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always a hands on learner. I enjoyed doing things myself and figuring out how everything worked. I enjoyed working on my own, but also liked working with other people because it helped me see the different ways people think and solve problems.
Outside of computers, I loved running and fishing, and I’ve always liked cars, especially older ones. Me and my friends were always working on them and fixing them, kind of like I do with computers.
Math came easy to me young, and I’ve always had a habit of finishing what I start. If I had a project, I wouldn’t stop thinking about it until it was done the right way.
