Hidden Gems: Meet Jesse Begley of Begley’s Butcher Block

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Begley.

Hi Jesse, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Jesse Begley brings over two decades of expert craftsmanship to Begley’s Butcher Block. After years in large chain grocery stores, Jesse grew frustrated with declining meat quality and the loss of the experienced butcher role. He saw an industry problem and knew he had the solution.

“Let’s go back to the basics and revive the meat industry,” Jesse says. Driven by this passion, he and his wife, Candace, opened Begley’s Butcher Block in downtown Simpsonville in October 2021. Their goal is to offer a personal experience, expert guidance, and superior products.

Their mission: “Focus on quality, consistency, exceptional customer service, and great brands of beef, pork, and chicken.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like most entrepreneurs, we navigated the expected hurdles: securing funding, optimizing our marketing, and learning the operational ropes of running a business—skills you truly learn by doing. The first few months involved significant “growing pains” as we fine-tuned our operations and built our team.

But our most defining challenge was beyond our control: the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the supply chain. We had a clear vision for when we wanted to open, but our essential meat cases and equipment were continually delayed. “We couldn’t open without our meat cases to put product in,” Jesse said. “The continuing delays kept pushing our opening day back, and that was incredibly frustrating. We needed to open our doors to make sales and pay the bills that were beginning to roll in.”

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Begley’s Butcher Block?
“We are a family-owned and operated business, run by a dedicated husband and wife team. Our greatest dream is to one day have our children working alongside us, with the hope of passing the business down to the next generation. Our family extends beyond us, as my mother-in-law is also a vital part of the team, and we’re proud to have a mother-daughter duo working with us as well. We believe that when everyone understands their role and responsibilities, working with family can be a rewarding experience. This philosophy of building a sense of family is one we extend to all of our employees.”

What Sets us apart…. “We’re not a grocery chain. We are a specialty butcher shop!”
We stick with specific brands of beef, pork, and chicken you won’t find in major retail stores because our focus is different. While large chains chase the lowest cost, our priorities are quality, consistency, and origin. It’s this commitment to better sourcing that elevates our products and allows you to see and taste the difference.” Furthermore, we love to focus on educating our customers. The community our business has built knows if they have any questions about cuts, grilling/smoking, recommendations, etc they can find that answer with one of our knowledgable meat specialist.

Our most proud brand…”Our absolute pride and joy—is our Prime Greater Omaha Beef. This exceptional American brand, raised and processed in Nebraska, is truly something special. We believe in it so much that it’s the only brand of beef you’ll find in our cases. We’re confident you’ll taste why we’re so proud of it!”

We want your readers to know. “The future for us is incredibly bright, and we want your readers to be a part of it! We began our journey in 2021 with just three meat cases and have strategically expanded our offerings every year since. We’re buzzing with great ideas and plans to implement even more exciting products and services as we grow. Stay tuned—the best is yet to come!”
