Hidden Gems: Meet Jordan Kennington of Kennington Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Kennington.

Hi Jordan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Counseling and mental health were not things I was familiar with growing up. Like many people, I only viewed therapy through the stigma of “something must be wrong with you to have to do that.” But luckily in college (after some difficult life experiences of my own) I discovered the very personal, life-changing joys of counseling! With the aid of a kind and wonderful counselor, I experienced self-growth in ways I never had before and found the resiliency to persevere through life’s difficulties.

That Licensed Counselor didn’t just change my mental health for the better, but my entire life trajectory. After undergraduate school, I decided to change course and pursue a Masters in Counseling and Development from Winthrop University. The rest is history. I opened my own private practice Kennington Counseling LLC in 2020 in Rock Hill, SC. In the spring of 2025, I moved my practice to gorgeous Greenville, SC where I can see clients from the upstate in person, as well as see clients all over South Carolina virtually.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening a private practice is 2020 was…an interesting journey. On the one hand, people needed counseling more than ever during a global pandemic! On the other hand, we were confined to our houses. I started my practice entirely virtually, something that was unheard of in the counseling world even one year prior. As I moved to some in person sessions during the beginning of 2021, it was with precautions like wearing masks and sanitizing my room after every session. I am so thankful for the clients who showed up during that time, because I still have the joy of seeing some of them today (without masks!)

My most recent struggle has been moving my business across South Carolina. Many clients from Rock Hill were happy to continue virtually with me, but I very much miss getting to see them physically in my office every week. Finding new office space, new furniture, new clients has been a stressful journey at times. But as I have settled into the Upstate, I am thankful to say that the pieces have fallen beautifully into place as I get to make new relationships with people on their journeys of growth and self-help.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a private practice counseling group aimed to provide a nonjudgemental, safe space for people in the Upstate and all throughout South Carolina to gain the tools and insight they need to set and accomplish their goals. My role as owner and counselor is to be a supporter and advocate for my clients. I empower people to understand they are the experts of their own lives and have the tools they need to make change and accomplish their goals. However, we all find times where we feel stuck and don’t know how to find answers for ourselves. That’s where counseling can help. My interns and I offer an open-minded, safe space for clients to process their thoughts and emotions, set goals, and develop new skills to accomplish those goals.

We work with clients of diverse ages, religions, genders, and sexual orientations, especially young adults, women, and religious professionals. Our areas of special interest include: anxiety and stress, depressions, life changes, relationship issues, premarital counseling, identity issues, LGBTQ+ issues, grief and loss, Christian counseling, and religious and spiritual issues.
