Inspiring Conversations with Shawn Tyler of Tylers’ Traveling Tavern

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Tyler.

Shawn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a sports and entertainment professional who also has an extensive background in entrepreneurship outside of these industries. My wife works in healthcare but has a strong background in the food industry. We started this dry-hire mobile bartending business as we were looking for venues in SC for our wedding. The rules and regulations are very strict, but in favor of business models like ours because the event host gets to provide any and all beverages they want served and we show up with our bar tools and equipment to serve what they want. Ultimately, it’s saving both the host and us money in the long run. We enjoy doing things outside of our 9-5 jobs that involve low stress and high energy moments. This was a perfect mix of that for us and we have enjoyed it so far.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Funny enough, of all the businesses I’ve dabbled in, this has been the most fun and smooth of them all. No one ever “hates” the bartender (unless they are bad/rude) under normal circumstances. What we provide guests and event hosts is over 10 years of experience planning and coordinating events along with knowing the mobile bartending business in-depth. This combination allows us to put our event coordinator hats on and help with all aspects of the event to make sure the host(s) and their guests have the best experience possible.

We’ve been impressed with Tylers’ Traveling Tavern, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a dry-hire mobile bartending business based in SC that is certified and insured to serve you and your guests in South Carolina and North Carolina. Weddings, corporate events, private parties; you name it, we can serve in any capacity! There are a ton of rules to follow in this space and we all too often get reached out to last minute because the selected vendor our hosts get do not have the proper paperwork. Whether you work with us or someone else, we always suggest that people take the time to ask for their selected vendors credentials and insurance information to ensure they can actually serve alcohol and other beverages. If not, we pride ourselves on being an easy to work with, affordable option for event hosts year-round.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I have taken many many risks in my life to get to where I am currently. The old saying “you win some and you lose some” is something that rings true for all entrepreneurs at some point in their journey. My great-grandmother used to always say that, “nothing beats a failure but a try”. I like that logic a lot more than ever not trying because the guarantee when you don’t try is you’ll never succeed. Success to me is adding additional streams of revenue for my family and treating people the right way. If at the end of my life I can achieve those two things, even if it’s $1 more for my family and 1 person happier in my sphere of influence, I’d say I was successful in life.
