Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Critcher.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery is part of Coker University, a student-focused, private liberal arts college located in Hartsville, South Carolina. Coker combines round table, discussion-based learning with hands-on experiences to promote active participation in and out of the classroom. The gallery is located within the The Gladys C. Fort Art Building, which opened in 1983. The Art Building also houses Coker’s Department of Art, a graphic design Mac lab, studio spaces and classrooms. Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery hosts a number of exhibitions annually that showcase professional artists and students throughout the academic year. Professional artists are invited to interact with students and our community through receptions and artist lectures. All exhibitions are accessible to the public Monday-Friday 10am-4pm when classes are in session.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently serve as the Exhibition Director at Cecelia Coker Bell Gallery. Working as a professional artist, I have had the pleasure of enjoying a dual career. In addition to my studio work, I am an academic at heart. After several years teaching within higher education, I pivoted to gallery administration. This position effectively utilizes my interest in curatorial pursuits, my art making background, and my organizational skills. Because I have worked many years as an artist myself, I am intent on working with artists who are also very passionate about their exhibitions – and I work very hard to show their work as they intended it to be experienced.
What’s next?
Our upcoming spring exhibitions include some really excellent artists, including sculptor Anne Mondro and mixed media installation artist Delaney Shin. We will also be sharing work by our Coker art students, SC high school students and Coker faculty and staff. I am also currently accepting proposals for the upcoming calendar year as we begin planning for the next season of exhibitions.
