Inspiring Conversations with Colette Allen of Palmetto Strong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colette Allen.

Hi Colette, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Even though my father has been an insurance agent in South Carolina for most of my life, my personal journey started with my work in home health care. I started this work because I was a new mom, and I needed a flexible schedule. I had no idea how much it would transform me. I developed real connections with my clients and I saw how much they struggled. They had so many needs, but barely understood their insurance benefits. The sick, elderly, and disabled didn’t just need help around the house. Many of them needed someone to explain their rights and benefits.

While still working to support my growing family, I started self-studying for the South Carolina Insurance Exam. In November, 2014, I earned my license and immediately began planning for the type of agency I wanted to have. I wanted my agency to focus on education, quality service, and compassion, not profits.

Now, almost 11 years later, I am proud to say that Palmetto Strong has grown into a trusted resource for South Carolina residents. I look forward to many more years of helping create healthier, happier clients.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I did not anticipate how hard it would be raising a large family and building a business from nothing. It has been a significant financial struggle, but it gets a little better each year. I am also blessed with an understanding family who have supported me on this journey.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Palmetto Strong is a healthcare advocacy agency based in South Carolina. We are proud to assist with health insurance and Medicare enrollments, as well as offering education and assistance with other programs, such as Medicaid and Extra Help. We take the time to make sure our clients understand specific terms, such as copay, deductible, and formulary.

The decisions people make during open enrollment will impact their healthcare for the entire year. It is important for us to make sure our clients get the best possible care in their area.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I hope to see an increase in clients, so that we can help more people. We’ve added several changes to our marketing strategies, so I’m cautiously optimistic.
