Inspiring Conversations with Bryanna Patten of The Lab Barbershop & Hair Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryanna Patten.

Hi Bryanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
All of my success stems from having a supportive foundation, my mother. She was a licensed cosmetologist in the state of Massachusetts all throughout my childhood. My mother was a strong, single, and independent woman that instilled in me everyday to be hardworking, kind, and optimistic. This meant that whenever I was not at school, I was sitting in the back room of the salon she worked in, peeking at all the action on the floor.
When I got to high school, the career center offered a cosmetology course that would license you at the end of senior year. I thought to myself, why not. If I didn’t carry on the career, so what. If I did carry on the career, the opportunities would be endless.
Senior year a started working for SportClips as a receptionist & when I graduated high school, I started to work as a licensed cosmetologist for the franchise. By 19 years old I was on the management & ambassador team.
6 years went by working for SportClips & one day a woman contacted me about doing a profit share situation with her barbershop.
I was scared to make the jump, but my faith is strong in God & I know now that this was a test of his trust. To make this already very long story short, the profit share turned into full ownership and the rest is victorious history.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of my struggles included: navigating & negotiating contracts, hiring employees, firing employees, marketing, navigating taxes.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Lab Barbershop & Hair Company?
I am a licensed master barber & cosmetologist. I specialize in all cuts, colors, and shaves.
Straight razor shaving is a dying craft in our day and age, I am known for doing it with excellence.
My knowledge and kindness sets me apart from people. I don’t know everything but I am willing to learn, and that’s step one.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
You have to be humble. Although we think we know everything, we don’t. When you let your walls down, you open the door for guidance. Going through life thinking you know everything because you’re a “boss” is short lived.
It doesn’t have to be in your same field of work, but find someone that is kind and genuine, and pick their brain.
Us humans don’t have conversations anymore. Put down your phone and open your mouth and find out what the stranger next to you does for work.
