Today we’d like to introduce you to Quintella Riley.
Hi Quintella, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been driven by a desire to make a difference in the lives of individuals struggling with mental illness. When I was an undergraduate student I had the opportunity to complete several clinical rotations and mental health was one of the rotations. While attending clinical rotations I fell in love with the setting. Often times I will sit out in the milieu and observe how patients interacted with staff and the other patients. I remember an encounter I had with a patient that was going through a challenging period in their life. It was then where I learned the importance of empathy and active listening all while being a source of support for this patient. During this period in my life I knew I wanted to make a difference in helping individuals overcome challenges. I soon recognized that my knowledge and efforts can help individuals improve their mental health to the best of their capabilities. After completing my post masters and working in the field, I decided to launch Reliant Psychiatric Services, LLC.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Unfortunately, this has not been a smooth road for me. Just like any business you will face challenges, obstacles, adversities. Trials and tribulations are inevitable. It is a part of life, right? God told us that specifically in the book of John 16:33. I will say one challenge that was difficult for me are the restrictions that are placed on advanced practice providers when it comes to providing health care. In the state of SC, we are considered a restricted state. In order for an advanced practice provider to provide care we must have physician oversight for the duration of our careers. This unfortunately, has delayed care because you have to find a physician that is not too expensive (nothing in life is free) and one that is willing to take on a supervising role. I can’t tell you how many potential patients I had to turned down because of this challenge. Hopefully in the future we will be granted full practice authority. I am claiming that for me and my colleagues.
