Meet Nicola Grate of Lexington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicola Grate.

Hi Nicola, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?

“My name is Nicola Grate, and I’m originally from Columbia, South Carolina. A 1993 graduate of Keenan High School, I pursued my passion for hairstyling, attending Kenneth Schuler School of Cosmetology in 1994 and later graduating from Columbia Beauty College in West Columbia, South Carolina, under the guidance of Miss Jackson. After receiving my cosmetology license, I worked in prominent chain salons like Hair Cuttery, Regis, and JCPenney’s, where I excelled as a keyholder manager, top colorist, and highest-selling stylist.

After a decade in chain salons, I became an independent contractor, renting a booth at Rent-a-Booth in 2006. Seizing opportunities, I opened my own salon in Batesburg-Leesville, later transitioning from cosmetology to barbering, where I became a master stylist and instructor. Successfully running my shop for over 10 years, I helped numerous students receive barbering certifications and eventually opened a second shop in Lexington, South Carolina, with plans to establish a school.

Although COVID-19 slowed down my progress, and I closed one of my shops, my dream of opening a school persisted. As a single parent, I prioritized my children’s education and waited until they were adults. In 2022, an opportunity arose, and I stepped out in faith to open Transitions Academy School of Barbering in February 2023. This journey has been rewarding and enlightening, and I’m grateful to have reached this level in my career, sharing my God-gifted talent with others.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

“Throughout my journey, I’ve faced numerous challenges. Initially, I relocated to a new location with plans to open a school, only to discover it was too small. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and my entire staff left, forcing me to rebuild both my team and client base after closing my base shop in Batesburg to focus on Lexington. Despite these setbacks, I persevered, remaining humble and committed to delivering exceptional service to my clients. Remarkably, just as I was navigating these challenges, I received an unexpected opportunity to expand my building, which ultimately paved the way for me to establish my school.”

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

“On a day-to-day basis, I focus on working closely with individuals on a one-on-one basis to empower them to become successful entrepreneurs and master their trade. As a specialist in cuts and color, I thrive on creativity and experimentation. What sets me apart is my versatility – I’m skilled in various areas, including haircuts, color, braiding, weaving, and barbering. With licenses in cosmetology, esthetics, and barbering, I’ve built a strong foundation. As a seasoned instructor with OJT experience, I’ve had the privilege of guiding many students to success in the industry. Additionally, I’m passionate about mentoring the next generation through my ‘Be Your Own Boss’ teen Boot Camp, which I’ve run for the past three summers. This two-week hands-on program allows teens as young as 16 to earn their natural hair care specialist license, enabling them to work independently in salons, barbershops, or even start their own businesses. It’s incredibly rewarding to see these young individuals gain the skills and confidence to pursue their dreams.”

What’s next?

“Looking ahead, my primary focus is on obtaining title IV approval for our post-secondary school. Achieving this milestone will not only enhance our institution’s credibility but also pave the way for future expansion. My long-term goal is to open another school in a high-need area, such as Batesburg-Leesville, providing valuable educational opportunities to the community and fostering growth and development in the region.”
