Today we’d like to introduce you to Gen Drummond.
Gen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in my family’s healthcare practice. My dad was a doctor, and from a young age I was immersed in the world of patient care, community, and the philosophy behind healthcare. I spent my teenage years sitting in seminar halls at taking notes I didn’t yet fully understand, but absorbing the passion and energy of a profession that served.
Eventually, I stepped into leadership myself, co-running our multidisciplinary clinic in addition to seeing patients myself as a nutritionist. That experience gave me a first-hand look at the incredible impact providers can have when their clinics run smoothly — and the struggles that happen when systems, leadership, and workflows aren’t aligned. I saw brilliant providers exhausted by admin, frustrated by inefficiencies, or burned out because their business wasn’t reflecting the quality of care they were delivering.
That’s what inspired me to found Hummingbird Clinical Consulting. My mission has always been to bring clarity and ease to healthcare operations — to help practices reduce overwhelm, strengthen their leadership and teams, and create systems that actually support both providers and patients. Today, Hummingbird works with clinics across North America, building frameworks for practice optimization, leadership development, values-based marketing, and financial sustainability.
For me, this isn’t just consulting. It’s about honoring the legacy of healthcare providers, giving them tools to thrive in business, and helping them focus on why they started in the first place — making a difference in patients’ lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the hardest seasons of my life was when I suddenly lost my dad to a brain aneurysm. He was not only my father, but also my mentor and partner in the clinic we ran together. Overnight, I had to step back into running the practice while also grieving an incredible personal loss. That period forced me to grow quickly as both a leader and a business owner — navigating staff, patients, and the operational side of a clinic, all while managing the weight of loss.
Eventually, I made the difficult decision to sell the practice. It was bittersweet, but it also gave me clarity: my true calling was to take everything I’d learned — the struggles, the systems, the leadership lessons — and use it to help other clinics thrive. That’s how Hummingbird Clinical Consulting was born.
The transition wasn’t easy. I had to build something from the ground up, find my own voice, and create trust in a new business. But those challenges became the foundation for Hummingbird. I know first-hand how fragile life can be, and how important it is to build practices and systems that are sustainable, values-driven, and supportive of both providers and patients.
