Community Highlights: Meet Lawson Roberts of Holy City Affairs Corporation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawson Roberts.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Lawson Roberts: From Spotlight to Strategy — A Life of Performance, Precision, and Premier Experiences

Lawson Roberts’ journey into the world of entertainment and events began almost as soon as he could walk. By the age of two, he was already performing behind a piano and microphone; by eight, he took the stage in To Kill a Mockingbird at the historic Dock Street Theatre. That early love for storytelling and live performance blossomed into a national presence when, at just 11 years old, he became the host of the nationally syndicated radio show Teen Talk—cementing his place as a born communicator with an instinct for connection.

From those roots in theater and broadcasting, Lawson’s path evolved into hospitality, where he opened a series of successful piano bars and nightclubs, each infused with a passion for immersive experiences and refined Southern charm. His award-winning cabaret productions and nearly decade-long role as Director of Jazz Events for Charleston’s prestigious Piccolo Spoleto Festival solidified his reputation as a creative powerhouse with a keen understanding of performance, atmosphere, and audience engagement.

Nearly 25 years ago, Lawson made a defining pivot into the world of event production. Drawing on his deep background in entertainment, he redefined what it meant to create interactive, immersive gatherings that leave lasting impressions. Today, as the visionary force behind Lawson Roberts Events, he leads a premier event production, design, and entertainment firm with operations in Charleston, Nashville, New York City, and Palm Beach. His portfolio includes iconic productions for films such as The Patriot and The Notebook, and he served as the lead design director for BRAVO’s hit series Southern Charm for over seven seasons.

Now serving as Chief Operating Officer of Holy City Affairs Corporation, Lawson oversees a dynamic, multifaceted luxury brand that delivers exquisitely curated experiences across the hospitality and event landscape. Under his leadership, Holy City Affairs has become Charleston’s premier provider of high-end concierge services, elite venue management, and bespoke event design. Whether executing an international gala or an intimate soirée, Lawson’s hallmark lies in balancing creativity, elevated aesthetics, and operational excellence with unwavering precision.

At his core, Lawson Roberts is a creative force and strategic leader—shaping unforgettable moments for discerning clients through an unmatched blend of storytelling, style, and service.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, nearly three decades in this industry haven’t come without their share of challenges. The most defining, without question, was the COVID-19 pandemic. For someone whose career is rooted in live experience—where gathering, celebration, and human connection are central—COVID brought everything to a standstill. It wasn’t just a business disruption; it was a full-scale reckoning. Venues shuttered, clients postponed indefinitely, and the very nature of events had to be reimagined overnight. But it also forced a creative reset. In the quiet, I had to rewire how we serve clients, create moments, and deliver value when the traditional playbook was useless. That era became less about opulence and more about intimacy, intention, and reinvention.

But growth itself has been its own thrilling—and at times daunting—challenge. Expanding into new markets like Nashville, New York, and Palm Beach brought incredible opportunity, but also the demand to be in multiple places at once. I had to master the art of cloning—not literally, but through strategic delegation, ironclad systems, and building a team that could execute to my standard even when I wasn’t in the room. That’s a lesson hard-won: to trust, to train, and to lead in such a way that your absence doesn’t mean a drop in excellence.

One of the steepest learning curves was scaling Holy City Affairs from a boutique creative firm to a fully operational luxury corporation—one that includes high-touch concierge services, multi-property venue management, and elite event design. The reality is, creativity only gets you so far. Growth demanded business acumen: contracts, insurance, payroll, investor relations. I had to become fluent in both the language of art and the language of operations.

Along the way, I’ve dealt with clients who were impossible to please, hurricanes that blew through outdoor galas, staffing crises in peak seasons, and the all-too-familiar sleepless nights where it felt like the vision might not survive the execution. But what’s carried me through is the belief that the experience matters. That if we’re doing it right—really right—people remember how they felt, not just what they saw.

Every challenge has refined my ability to adapt, lead, and deliver something even better than before. And I wouldn’t trade a single setback—because every one of them helped me level up into the business we are today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Where the Industry Is Headed: Lawson Roberts on the Next 5 to 10 Years of Luxury Events and Hospitality

If there’s one thing the last few years have taught us, it’s that this industry is anything but static. In the next five to ten years, we’re going to see a full-scale evolution — not just in aesthetics or formats, but in how clients experience, interact with, and value hospitality itself. And frankly, it’s overdue.

First, we’re heading into an era of hyper-personalized luxury. Clients no longer want “impressive” events — they want meaningful ones. The new high-end isn’t about how much was spent; it’s about how custom and intentional it feels. Whether it’s a dinner party for 10 or a destination wedding for 300, personalization will drive every decision — from scent to sound, from welcome cocktails to goodbye notes. It’s not just what you’re serving anymore — it’s why and how.

Second, we’re going to see a rise in boutique-scale, high-impact experiences. Large-scale galas and sprawling events will always have their place, but the pendulum is swinging toward curated, layered moments that are rich with storytelling, detail, and intimacy. Think estate dinners, private concerts, immersive art installations — experiences that feel like they couldn’t have happened for anyone but you.

Technology will also shape the future — but not in the cold, sterile way people once feared. Instead, hospitality tech will be about seamless luxury: frictionless guest check-ins, AI-powered customization, mobile concierge platforms that remember your favorite cocktail and your dog’s name. But the real winners will be the brands who marry innovation with warmth — who use tech to amplify human connection, not replace it.

Sustainability will no longer be a buzzword — it’ll be a demand. Clients will expect event producers and venue managers to build greener, source locally, and reduce waste. But the challenge will be maintaining luxury while still being environmentally and socially responsible. This will take true innovation, not just pretty words.

And lastly, we’re going to see a shift in talent. The industry is burning out. The next generation of producers, chefs, designers, and concierges will demand more balance, more purpose, and more room for creativity. The firms that foster that culture — the ones that don’t just preach excellence but invest in people — will win long-term.

At Holy City Affairs, we’re not just watching these changes — we’re already building systems and services around them. From the Arete Experience’s ultra-custom concierge services to the way we manage venues with a blend of tech and touch, we’re planning for the next era of luxury… not the last one.

The bottom line? In the next decade, success won’t belong to the biggest players. It will belong to the most thoughtful ones.
