Our family moved from Berlin to Charleston — with our children and our dog — to start a new chapter and make a long-held dream come true. Tom, the owner and chef, spent childhood summers in Charleston visiting his aunt, often accompanied by his Oma Charlotte. Those early experiences sparked a deep connection to this place and to the rituals around food and family.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t been entirely smooth — and that’s been part of the journey. Moving from Berlin with our children to start a new life in Charleston was a big leap filled with uncertainty. Navigating a new culture, building a business from the ground up , and balancing family life all presented real challenges.
There were moments of doubt and hard work behind the scenes that many don’t see — long hours, learning curves, and figuring out how to bring our vision to life in a way that feels authentic. But every challenge has made the café and our commitment stronger.

Café Charlotte is a cozy, family-owned café nestled in West Ashley, Charleston. We specialize in bringing a unique blend of European café culture and Southern hospitality to our community. Our focus is on serving fresh, thoughtfully prepared food — from savory dishes like our signature eggplant baguette to comforting pastries and expertly roasted coffee, all made in-house by our owner and chef, Tom.
What sets us apart is the personal story behind every plate and cup. Tom brings passion and years of experience in cooking and baking, inspired by his childhood summers in Charleston and family traditions rooted in Europe. We strive to create more than just a place to eat; we aim to build a welcoming space where people can slow down, connect, and feel at home.
