Conversations with Benji Greeson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benji Greeson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in radio by answering an ad in the paper when I was in high school. The local AM station was looking for interns and they hired me. I did that for a couple of years. Finished school, and started working for a major railroad company. I worked there for 11 years. There were cut backs and layoffs, the landscape just wasn’t stable. So I ended up back in radio, thanks to then WZLA station owner, Shelley Reid. I started the Southern Fried Morning Show in 2014, and bought the station in 2020. 11 years in and we’re still going strong.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No the road is not always smooth. In the beginning, just getting your name and brand out there is a tremendous task. You have to attract listeners to attract advertisers. That took a little while, but eventually there was snowball effect.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I currently own WZLA Radio station (92.9fm – wzlaradio.com) and our studios are located in Abbeville, SC. I not only own the station, but I host the morning show (The Southern Fried Morning Show) from 6-10am Monday – Friday. I also do sports broadcasting for Abbeville High School football and baseball. So, content creation is a big part of the morning show. Staying up on current events, news, ect. Things move fast in news and events, so keeping relevant topics flowing is a big part of what we do. I try to keep the sad stuff off of the show. We bring a positive light, a positive approach to the stories, and we play games, and keep the audience engaged that way. You can hear the bad stuff anywhere, just turn on the TV, right? I guess I’m kind of known as being the voice of the community at this point. And I think what sets us apart from most morning shows, and the thing I’m most proud of is that we’re not afraid to share about our faith. I don’t shove it down the listeners throat every day, but if the subject is brought up, I share about how God has worked in my life and relate it whatever topic we’re discussing at the time. I feel like God has given me this incredible platform, and He deserves the credit for that.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Well, although I’m in the public eye often, with a very public job. I’m kind of a home body. I like my personal time with just my family and a small’ish circle of friends when I’m not live on radio, or hosting events, or emceeing concerts or festivals. Very extroverted job, very introverted personal life.
