Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Simmons.
Hi Katie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Art has always been an integral part of who I am. Whether it’s drawing, painting, singing, or writing, I’ve always been drawn to creative expression. When I was 13, two of my classes happened to have field trips on the same day. I was scheduled to sing in a choral concert and attend a trip to the Columbia Museum of Art. Both teachers were incredibly supportive and told me the choice was mine to make. That simple gesture meant the world to me, but it also forced me to look inward and make a difficult decision between two things I deeply loved. It was the first time that I truly understood the weight and impact of choice. I decided to go to the art museum, and that choice helped guide me to what I ended up pursuing in life. Initially, I thought I would pursue architecture. However, instead of designing physical places, I discovered I am passionate about designing digital spaces. I watched my passion morph into something that allows me not only to find beauty and joy in everyday life, but also enables me to create it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing worthwhile comes without struggle. I was born with the most severe form of Spina Bifida, and my family was told I would never walk. That alone presented and continues to present a unique set of challenges. I defied the odds, and despite medical predictions, I learned how to walk at a typical age. Ever since, I have refused to allow myself to be limited. While I could have chosen to stay home and rely solely on government assistance, I knew I was capable of more and chose to work.
My mother instilled in me a strong work ethic and the belief that if you have a responsibility, you rise to meet it. This mindset has carried me through every chapter of my life, and I’ve seen firsthand how my work can positively impact others. That’s what motivates me, even when things get difficult.
I earned my master’s degree shortly after I began freelancing, which eventually led to a full-time role with the state of South Carolina. Unlike many business owners, I maintain a full-time job, while also running my own business on the side. This gives me the stability I need while offering the flexibility to oscillate my hours and creative energy. Balancing work and life isn’t always easy, and it’s something I continue to work on. However, when you’re doing what you love and know that it is making a real difference in someone’s life or business, the effort is worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
K. Creative is a one-stop creative agency that specializes in branding and website design for small to medium-sized businesses. I help bring brands to life, from concept to final execution. This includes logo design, advertising, promotional materials, brand photography, and social media content. My work is set apart by a deep understanding of accessibility and ADA compliance, ensuring that every design is not only beautiful but also inclusive and functional. I approach each project holistically, and craft stories that connect across platforms and resonate with real people. You won’t find K. Creative on social media–I rely solely on referrals and my website to build lasting client relationships. Whether it’s creating a brand or shaping a digital space, my goal is to make every experience feel intentional, human, and just a little bit magical.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I’ve learned so much over the years. The lesson that stands the test of time, though, is the power and importance of resilience and resourcefulness. No matter the challenge, the ability to adapt, stay grounded, and find creative solutions has carried me further than anything else.
