Community Highlights: Meet Desireé Davis of SASC Services LLC (The Sweet & Savory Chef)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desireé Davis.

Hi Desireé, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been blessed to live a few lives in my 40 years. I grew up a military brat, constantly adapting, observing, and soaking in the world around me. While my parents worked or served overseas, I spent my time flipping through food magazines, sneaking tastes in the kitchen, and getting lost in shows like Emeril Live, Iron Chef, and Grilling with Bobby Flay. I didn’t know it then, but food was quietly becoming my foundation.

Some of my best memories are tied to the dinner table — weeknight meals, holidays, birthdays. It wasn’t just the food, it was the experience. The gathering. The love. That stuck with me. I fell in love with the rhythm and ritual of it all. That’s what I try to recreate for others.

The path here hasn’t been easy. I’ve walked through addiction, homelessness, broken relationships — but I also walked through recovery, healing, and learning how to build something meaningful from the ground up. Before culinary school, I completed a basic culinary training program that gave me my start. From there, I found my way to transitional housing, then eventually enrolled in culinary school and rediscovered my voice — this time through food.

Along the way, I was fortunate to meet people who believed in me, supported me, and gave me chances when I was still unknown. I carry all of that with me now — in the way I cook, the way I serve, the way I move through this industry.

Today, The Sweet & Savory Chef is my way of honoring that journey. I cook to create space — for joy, for healing, for connection. Because for me, it’s always been more than food.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest struggles has been learning how to balance passion with capacity. In the beginning, I said yes to everything. I was overbooking myself, doing too much with too little, and trying to be everything to everyone — meal prep, catering, events, private dinners, nonprofit work. I burned out more than once, and I had to step back and ask myself not just what I wanted to do, but how I wanted to live.

It’s also been a challenge to create boundaries with clients and protect the integrity of my time and creativity. As a Black woman chef in the South, there’s often pressure to lower prices or overdeliver just to prove your value. Learning how to charge what I’m worth, create sustainable systems, and communicate my vision clearly — those have been real growth points.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
