Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerimia Wood.
Hi Jerimia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a military child growing up and spent a majority of my life in Alaska. I lived there for 18 years. One day during high school, I experienced the coldest day of my life. It was -60 degrees, not including the wind chill. It was so cold you are given a break during school to go start your vehicle. I had a ‘96 Kia and when I started the car it was just shaking. I took my pointer finger and pressed it to my review mirror and where the glass connected to the plastic. A chunk of glass broke where the mirror was connected. After that moment, I told myself, “Alright, we’re not staying in Alaska anymore lol.” After I graduated, I joined the military and was stationed at Seymour Johnson in Goldsboro, NC as an air traffic controller. I truly enjoyed the job, but the atmosphere just wasn’t for me. After my time, I decided to stay on the east coast and moved to Columbia, SC. I jumped around and tried so many different things! At one point, I was a personal trainer. Later, I got a sales job. After that point, my life opened up to the world of what being a business owner was like. I was so used to structure, following orders, and just being told what to do. But, I took it upon myself to grow and develop and experience all that I could! From selling water softener systems in a home, to handyman work and getting knowledge in different trades. Everything I applied myself to I excelled. Before my last career change, I was working in a call center (sales) and was so tired of the same thing over and over. I met a gentleman who would flip homes. He was telling me about his home inspection experience on one of his last properties. I thought about it. It was outdoors which I loved and something always new. I emailed the owner over and over watching, learning, until after 3 months I was hired on. Now home inspecting wasn’t the easiest thing, my process was very self-taught research looking things up occasionally getting some insight from my boss. It was more “no that’s wrong” and I had to figure out what was right. However, my dedication was there, and I knew I was going to get it! The company I started under they had been running for over 13 years. They were busy and very particular how their inspections were run. With the utmost detail! Six months later, I received my license in SC. After that, I completed two inspections a day every single day 5 days a week. So far in my career, I’ve done more than 1,000 inspections.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I had aspirations to start my own business; I bought my first brand-new vehicle; my fiancée and I planned to get a house. However, on July 8th, 2023, my life changed. I was driving up to Rock Hill, SC, to visit my fiancée. I was traveling on I-77 when a trailer detached from the back of a truck, went across the median, and the hitch went through the firewall of my truck. The trailer hitch also went through my right calf. I woke up in the hospital, I couldn’t walk. I had bandages around my head and was surrounded by my family. After things settled, I got to learn the extent of everything. My brand new truck was totaled. Our offer on the house fell through due to me not having income anymore. I couldn’t work because I couldn’t walk. I didn’t have health insurance, so my savings dwindled quickly. I felt like I lost everything and almost fell into a deep depression. The only thing, that allowed me to accept what had happened. On the day of the accident, there was another truck right beside me pulling a 5th wheeler. There was a family with a 3-year-old daughter inside that truck. The 3-year-old was the only one who come out with just a rash from her car seat. If I was not there, I don’t know what would have happened to that little girl. At that moment, I felt like I was put there for a reason. Me still being alive today, I felt as if I was still here for a reason. So, I kept my head up and didn’t stop pushing. My wife and all of her amazingness took it upon herself, and she found as a home out in Lancaster SC. I pushed and stretched every day, and we still were able to have ourselves a much smaller wedding come September 2023, and I made sure I was standing on 2 feet at the altar waiting for her. In January 2024, I was medically cleared to work. With the help from my loving wife, I started up my own business. Boy was it slow! I was working multiple jobs to be able to contribute, but this was what I wanted to do and never gave up! I put the groundwork in and grew my business the best I could. As of this year, I am blessed to be able to focus solely on my home inspection business and expand into North Carolina as well! With pure persistence, dedication, and integrity with my work I have laid the foundation to be one of the most personable, and detailed home inspectors in the Carolinas!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Informative Inspection LLC?
I am a licensed home inspector for NC and SC. I deal with clients who are looking to buy homes or sell homes such as a pre-listing inspection, investors wanting to know what is going on with a property before they purchase, and even some on the commercial side. I have some clients who get yearly inspections, so they are always aware of the condition of their home. When it comes to a home inspection, I cover every aspect of the home: exterior, grading, roof, structural, electrical, plumbing, attic, and interior. What I am most proud of with my business is transparency and communication that comes with my services. My biggest belief is anything that I see, you will know about so there aren’t any surprises!
