Today we’d like to introduce you to Theo Sotiroglou.
Hi Theo, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sure! Our story really begins with family—both literally and in the way we do business. I (Theo) came to Charleston while serving in the Navy and ended up planting roots here after meeting Laurie, a local. We then made Goose Creek home and raised five sons, all of whom have followed me into the world of real estate in one way or another.
I began my real estate career in 1985, and later became a licensed home builder. Over the years, I’ve worn just about every hat in the industry—broker, builder, investor, mentor. That wide-ranging experience laid the foundation for The Family Real Estate Group.
Now, with 30+ years under our belt, we’ve grown into a full-service real estate team based in the tri-county Charleston area. We do everything from traditional sales and property management to new construction and investment mentorship.
Each member of the family brings something different to the table. For example, Chris, transitioned from managing restaurants to becoming an award-winning agent. He genuinely enjoys helping people find the right home—and making sure they feel supported.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not always smooth but that’s part of what shaped who we are today. Like most small businesses, we’ve had our share of challenges.
Early on, I was balancing military life, a growing family, and getting my start in real estate. Long hours, tight budgets, and learning the ropes through real-world trial and error. Over my career there’ve been market crashes, shifting regulations, and unpredictable economic cycles. Each of those challenges force us to adapt fast.
One of the biggest transitions was growing from a one-man show into a full-fledged family business. It’s been rewarding, but it’s also come with growing pains. Between learning to divide responsibilities, bringing in systems and tools, all while still keeping a relationship-based service at the heart of everything was an interesting set of growing pains.
New technology, changing buyer expectations, and most recently, the major shifts in commission structures have made us rethink how we do business. But we see those challenges as opportunities to keep getting better.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’re not just real estate agents. We’ve built homes. We’ve invested in properties. We’ve managed rentals. And over the years, we’ve helped all kinds of people through just about every kind of real estate situation.
You might be buying your first home, selling one you’ve outgrown, or maybe you’re thinking about building from scratch. We’ve done all of that ourselves—and we’re here to walk you through it. Our background in construction, especially, gives you an advantage when it comes to things like home inspections, renovation projects, or buying a new build. We’ve been in the buyer and seller’s shoes, and we know the questions to ask before problems come up.
People tell us they work with us because we’re honest, we don’t sugarcoat things, and we’re easy to talk to. That’s important. Real estate isn’t just about numbers or contracts, it’s about people.
We’re most proud of the trust we’ve built. So much of our business comes from referrals—friends telling friends, neighbors sending neighbors. That means the world to us. We’re a family business, and we treat every client like they’re part of it.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was pretty shy—but I was always curious. I liked to figure out how things worked, whether it was taking apart a toy or asking a million questions about something I didn’t understand. I wasn’t the loudest kid in the room, but I paid attention. I listened. That’s how I learned.
Books were a big part of my childhood. I loved adventure stories—anything that took me to places I hadn’t seen yet. That curiosity carried over into the real world, too. I spent a lot of time outside, just exploring or building little projects with my friends. We’d get creative, make forts, take stuff apart, try to put it back together. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t—but I always stuck with it.
I also liked to draw and make up stories. That creative side helped balance out the more technical stuff I was drawn to. I was the kind of kid who’d try a science experiment just to see what would happen. And I’d keep trying until I got it right.
When it came to sports or games, I was competitive, sure—but being part of a team mattered more to me than winning. I liked working with people, figuring things out together. And I always valued strong friendships. I wasn’t usually the one talking the most, but I was there, listening, paying attention—just like I still do today.
