Today we’d like to introduce you to Katurah Turner.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My photography journey began in the most personal way—with my daughter. When she was an infant, we’d take her to get professional photos, and no matter what the photographer tried, she wouldn’t smile. But everything changed when I picked up a borrowed camera and got behind it myself. She lit up for me in a way she never did for anyone else. That was the spark.
I didn’t set out to become a photographer—it grew from a mother’s love and a desire to capture the kind of genuine, joy-filled moments I couldn’t find in a studio session. Over time, that spark turned into a passion, and that passion became a business.
For more than fifteen years, I’ve had the honor of photographing countless weddings, motherhood milestones, and portraits that mean the world to the people in them. Through every chapter, I’ve stayed rooted in what first inspired me: the quiet magic of a genuine smile and the power of photography to preserve the beauty of now.
Today, Itan Images is more than a brand—it’s a legacy born from love, shaped by experience, and guided by the belief that your most meaningful moments deserve to be captured.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, but that’s where the growth happens. When I first started, I was a mom with a borrowed camera. I didn’t have formal training or a business plan—I just knew I loved capturing real, heartfelt moments. I had to learn everything the hard way: how to work with different lighting, pose people in a natural way, and edit without losing the true-to-life beauty of an image.
There were seasons when I questioned whether I was doing enough or good enough, especially as I balanced motherhood, work, and building a business from the ground up. I’ve faced the self-doubt that comes with being a creative entrepreneur, and I’ve had to grow through things like undercharging, overworking, and learning to set healthy boundaries.
But every challenge has shaped me into the photographer I am today—someone who leads with empathy, brings calm to chaotic moments, and always strives to deliver beautiful photos and a meaningful experience for my clients. The road may have had bumps, but it’s been worth every step.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in capturing romantic, true-to-life portraits celebrating love, motherhood, and legacy. My work is rooted in timeless beauty—images filled with vibrant color, natural light, and genuine emotion. I photograph weddings, families, moms, daughters and any person to preserve the moments that matter most in a way that will still feel meaningful decades from now.
Beyond being a photographer, I’m also an artist. I create fine art pieces from the images I’ve captured—carefully crafted to elevate everyday moments into lasting works of art.
I am most proud of being a woman of color behind the lens for more than 15 years and the bonds I have made with former clients. I bring calm, care, and confidence to every session. It has been said that I help people feel at ease, even those who say they’re camera shy. My clients often tell me they see themselves differently—more beautifully—through my lens, and that’s a gift I don’t take lightly.
What sets me apart is the heart behind it all. Knowing that everyone has a back story, I didn’t start this journey with a business plan—It was me, my daughter ,a Minolta and the desire for a genuine smile. That sense of meaning has never left me. I create with intention, serve with empathy, and approach every session as both a photographer and an artist. I am here to help honor stories with grace and authenticity.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor or building a strong network doesn’t always happen overnight—it takes intention, humility, and a willingness to give and receive. The most meaningful connections have come from simply showing up as my authentic self. Whether it’s joining local creative groups, attending photography workshops, or just reaching out to someone whose work I admire with a kind message, the best relationships have grown from genuine connection.
One thing that’s worked well for me is staying open to learning—from people inside and outside the photography industry. Sometimes, your greatest mentor isn’t another photographer—it’s a business owner, a mother, a client, or even a stranger who speaks truth into your journey. I also believe in the power of community over competition. Sharing knowledge, offering encouragement, and cheering others on has brought more opportunities and friendships than I imagined.
My advice? Don’t wait for the “perfect” mentor. Look for people who inspire you and start conversations. Ask questions. Listen well. Be kind and consistent. And most of all, trust that your path doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s
