Conversations with Denise Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Adams.

Hi Denise, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in rural New York, where much of my childhood was spent hiking through the Catskills or exploring my grandparents’ backyard in search of frogs and snakes. Those early experiences instilled in me a deep reverence for nature and a lasting appreciation for the world around us.

Even now, as an adult, there’s nothing that brings me more joy than spending time outdoors. I bought my first camera—a Canon Rebel—from my brother, and in 2022, I took my first (admittedly frustrating) steps into landscape photography. Over time, and with the support of my family and friends, I’ve grown more confident in my skills.

Today, I find just as much fulfillment in photographing New York’s wildlife as I do its breathtaking landscapes. Being able to capture and share these moments is incredibly meaningful to me. In 2024, I took a leap and opened my own small photography business, with the goal of helping others experience the beauty I get to experience.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting out, I really struggled with imposter syndrome—and to be honest, I still do.

Anxiety and OCD have been ongoing challenges in my life, and they’ve definitely impacted how I approach my photography. There have been times when it’s been hard to put myself or my work out there, or when self-doubt made it difficult to move forward.
But photography has also become a kind of therapy for me. Being out in nature, behind the lens, helps me reconnect with the world and with myself. Over time—and with the encouragement of people close to me—I’ve started to push past the fear of not being “good enough” and learned to find value in simply sharing what I see and feel.

I think that vulnerability actually effects my work in a positive way. It’s made me more intentional, more present, and more aware of the quiet beauty in things that are often overlooked.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently work in finance and human resources for a medical practice, helping to manage the operational side of things and support the team. Before transitioning into this role, I spent over a decade working in animal sheltering. I started with hands-on tasks like cleaning and caring for animals, and over time, I moved into management and even served as an animal cruelty investigator. My journey has allowed me to work in both compassionate and organizational roles, giving me a unique perspective on balancing business needs with empathy. Outside of my professional life, photography has become both a creative outlet and a growing side project. What started as a hobby has turned into a way for me to reconnect with nature, manage my mental health, and share the beauty I find in the world around me.

What matters most to you?
At the heart of everything I do, my family and friends are what matter most. Their support has shaped so much of who I am—both personally and professionally. Whether it’s encouraging me through career changes, standing by me during tough times, or cheering me on as I grow my photography side project, I’m incredibly grateful for the people in my life. They keep me grounded, inspired, and remind me what truly matters.
