Today we’d like to introduce you to Capt Tim Deckard.
Hi Capt Tim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I wanted to start a charter business on the coast so I persuaded my wife to move our family to Beaufort SC in the late 1990’s.
I set about getting my Captain’s license, and once I received Coast Guard certification I began working for a sea towing company, which helped enormously in navigating the area. Subsequently, in 2004, I launched my own guide service, Cast Away Charters, offering fishing trips, cruising, nature odysseys and other water based experiences. As the company grew in popularity I invited a highly regarded local Captain, Kevin Mears, to join me, then two other area pro anglers, Captain Nations (Nat) Finley, and Captain Hunter Griffith, came on board too. It’s been the four of us, and good times, ever since!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Growing a business from a “one man band” so to speak, is always challenging because you give up some control as you expand.
We’ve been lucky because we have such a great team of experienced, quality Captains who really embrace our motto, “5 Star Service from Start to Finish!”
They work extremely hard to ensure our guests have amazing and memorable trips; you can’t ask more from your fellow Captains than that.

Our US Coast Guard licensed, Pro Angler Master Captains are highly regarded, and well qualified in navigating the local waterways, and committed to providing exceptional customer service, safety, and reliability. What are your plans for the future?
We strive to offer fun, memorable water based adventures, along with providing expert, professional guide services for specialty trips like nautical memorials and research projects. At Cast Away Charters, it is all about our valued guests, making sure they have the best possible experience, and one they’ll hopefully want to repeat! Our motto is “5 Star Service From Start To Finish” for a reason: it is our company’s guiding principle and standard of performance. And each year we introduce a new, enjoyable event for our guests. In 2025 we are hosting a “Cast Away Fish Fry” with one of our popular local partners, Sea Seas Honey Hole in Port Royal. We’ll be posting more about this special event as we get closer, so stay tuned!
