Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Gilliard.
Hi Brandon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Brandon. I’m a small town guy at heart, but I’m also a first-call session and touring bass player.
I’ve recorded or shared stages with artists such as Ashlee Simpson, LECRAE, Lalah Hathaway, Evan Ross, Nick Jonas, Deborah Cox, Sho Baraka, Janelle Monáe, KIMBRA, Big Boi of OutKast, David Crowder, Erykah Badu, Avery*Sunshine, Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, Tye Tribbett, Maceo Parker, P. Diddy, Bob Carlisle, Jennifer Holliday, Ann Nesby, Archie Bell, Vicky Beeching, Daysahead, Juanita Bynum, Angie Stone, Bebe Winans, INOJ, Chinua Hawk, Roman GianArthur, PRINCE and many others.
I’ve also appeared on numerous television shows such as The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Saturday Night Live, The Arsenio Hall Show, The Today Show, The Fox & Friends Morning Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, Later with Jools Holland, Austin City Limits, Le Grande Journal, BET’s 106 & Park and the BET Awards.
My movie soundtrack recording credits include working with Henson Studios, Fox, Blue Sky Studios and world-renown composer, John Powell on RIO 2, Ferdinand, STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie and most recently, Migration. Migration won the Outstanding Music Composition Emmy Award in 2024.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road to success hasn’t been easy. There have been lots of struggles along the way, but I’ve never been a quitter. I’m probably one of the most determined people you’ll ever meet.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a professional bass player who works with many of the big-name artists that you know and love. I also record lots of movie scores. I’m proficient at sight reading music and also have the ability to play-by-ear. That gives me the ability to perform any genre of music at a high level.
I take pride in being known as one of the most responsible and self-sufficient musicians in the business. When a client hires, me I always get the job done.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The professional music world seems huge, but is actually pretty small. Most of the pros know each other. The majority of our referrals come by word of mouth. As a work-for-hire musician, I’ve worked everything from The White House to Coachella to small town weddings.
