Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Simmons.
Hi Brandon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started playing music at the age of 11 with the trumpet in band. I played symphony and jazz from 6th grade through high school. At the age of 12, I started playing the drums. I was the drummer for my church from ages 14-18, and within those years, I formed my first band. While playing in that band, I was writing half of the songs and decided I wanted to start a solo project. So, at the age of 17, I started playing guitar. I went to the Atlanta School of Music at 19, moved back to Charleston at the age of 22 and started two bands. One of which is still active, Token Mary. We are a cover band in the area, and I am the drummer, as well as one of the singers. I also started playing solo acoustic gigs around the greater Charleston area. Recently, I started another project called “Brandon and the Boys”. I act as the frontman/singer/guitarist, and we play covers, as well as my own personal original music. Currently, I still perform full time as a solo acoustic act, play the drums for Token Mary, lead Brandon and the Boys, and write/record original music, which you can find on all platforms under my full name “Brandon Lamar Simmons”. Between all of these projects, you can find me at any local bar, pub, brewery, wedding, or event. Music always has been, and will forever be an obsession of mine. I’ll never stop. Listen out!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had ups and downs. I’ve had people tell me that I shouldn’t be playing music, people that I considered loved ones trying to stop me from what I feel called to do. That was my biggest obstacle, and until recently I let it hold me back from certain opportunities.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I stated previously, I’m a Charleston musician involved multiple local projects. I also teach guitar and drum lessons. It’s how I make my living. I try to have a very distinct sound to set myself apart from other musicians as well.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Two books I’ve read recently that stuck with me are the following.
Will Smiths autobiography “Will”, which talks about his hustle growing up, and how he got where he is today
“The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*** “, which talks about not putting your energy and concerns into the wrong things that will ultimately hold you back, like other people opinions, for example.
