Meet George McManus of Charleston, SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to George McManus.

Hi George, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Music has always been a big part of my life. My dad played in a band while growing up in London, my mom regularly attended different shows in Chicago, and my brother creates electronic music. Growing up in Chicago, I was fortunate to attend many concerts across many different genres, occasionally with my family. This sparked my interest in music at a young age. After buying my first DJ controller in high school, I taught myself the basics and DJ’d for a few friends before graduating. I then attended the College of Charleston, where I DJ’d at college parties and local bars. Since graduating in 2021, I have remained in Charleston and have earned residencies at the best local dance clubs. I have enjoyed bringing a unique sound to the Lowcountry. My Chicago and London influences play a big role in my sound and the type of performance I strive to present.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it has been a smooth road. I embrace all of the highs and lows in the music industry. Navigating the club scene can be tough at times, but resilience is crucial. Early on, I learned that being as professional and dependable as possible helps significantly; I prioritize building strong relationships with everyone I work with. As much fun as performing is, difficulties would include the late nights and balancing my day job and personal life. I also recognize DJ’ing is a professional business that needs to be treated as such; I reinvest as much time and resources as possible back into my brand. Patience is also key in building my career; I try not to rush anything and stay true to myself, as cliche as that sounds. It is easy to focus on the smaller, daily goals, but I find it important to keep my eyes on the bigger picture and take time to reflect.
I look forward to the future as much as I look back on my accomplishments.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I am a resident club DJ in North and South Carolina. I am learning music production while developing a unique sound I identify with. At the end of the day, I love music and pride myself on curating unique set lists that tell a story. I enjoy performing and playing the music that I love for others. I am proud to say that I have never given up, and I have never had to miss or cancel a show. I know cancellations may come in the future, but I am happy with my commitment to my craft.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Being able to perform and entertain makes me happy. People work very hard to earn a break during the weekend. When people decide to spend their hard-earned money and time at one of my shows, it means the world to me, and I want to deliver. I am very fortunate to be able to promote my music and taste, which makes me happy. When I’m happy, the dance floor is happy and vice versa.
