Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Tarah Davis of The Rooted Farmacy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tarah Davis.

Hi Dr. Tarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am Dr. Tarah Davis. I am a Doctor of Pharmacy, a functional medicine practitioner, a nutrition fanatic, and philomath. I am also a military spouse and a crunchy momma.

I experienced my first taste of alternative medicine when I was 13. I became really sick, had diarrhea twenty times a day, and it continued for over 6 months. I saw so many specialty doctors, but no one could really give me any answers, except “its IBS”. One doctor offered a long-term medication, but my mom wasn’t convinced. One day she told me that we were going to go see a chiropractor and it was a last-ditch effort, so we went… That chiropractor gave me some supplements and put me on a diet. A diet. A WHOLE FOODS DIET. After 2 weeks, the diarrhea went away. I could be a normal teenager again. I later learned that healing from this setback, would take many more steps.

I was sold, I was a believer! My mom was a believer! We never looked back. I have used functional medicine to address issues that have come up at different times throughout my life since.

I always knew I wanted to do something with medicine, but none of the traditional avenues felt quite right. So, I went to pharmacy school. The day I told my professors that I wanted to own a pharmacy where a patient could bring me a prescription and I offer them an alternative supplement/ nutraceutical/ a diet plan instead, they wrote me off as crazy. I persisted.

I began my career as a pharmacy manager at a large independent pharmacy that specialized in alternative medicine and hormone compounding. A step in the right direction.

There have been many steps along the way, not always in the right direction, but always leading forward. Now, with The Rooted Farmacy, I am able to give all my time and effort to my patients to make a positive impact on their quality of life. Through the power of functional medicine and whole foods nutrition, we get to the true root cause of their disease or discomfort and educate and empower them to lead healthy lives for the long term.

I am currently finishing up my Applied Functional Medicine Certification, and I will be the only AFMC certified practitioner in Charleston, SC. The prestigious AFMC certification is earned through 2.5-3 years of immersive study, clinical application, and examination.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road—but one I’m incredibly grateful for.

I started in the conventional pharmacy world, following the “success” script I thought I was supposed to. I was dispensing medications day in and day out, but I couldn’t ignore the disconnect—people weren’t getting better. In many cases, they were getting sicker. Deep down, I knew something was missing from that model. I was already curious about alternative medicine even before my own health challenges began—it just made sense to me that the body needed more than a prescription pad.

And then life made it personal.

During pregnancy, I had serious complications that nearly cost me my life. What followed was a cascade of symptoms—chronic fatigue, gut dysfunction, anxiety, hair loss, and weight gain. But despite how clearly my body was screaming for help, I was told over and over that I was “healthy.” It was infuriating and isolating. I was dismissed by the same system I had once trusted and worked within.

At that point, I stopped waiting for someone else to fix it—I dug in and started healing myself. Functional medicine gave me the tools I was missing. It helped me peel back the layers, find the root causes, and truly understand what was going on beneath the surface.

That journey didn’t just change my health—it changed my life. I realized I couldn’t go back to conventional pharmacy and feel fulfilled. I was meant to do this work differently.

Building my own practice has been full of learning curves, risks, and growth. But it’s also been deeply rewarding. I get to help people feel seen, supported, and actually well. And that makes every bump in the road worth it.

We’ve been impressed with The Rooted Farmacy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At The Rooted Farmacy, we don’t chase symptoms—we chase root causes. Founded by Functional Medicine Pharmacist Dr. Tarah Davis, our virtual wellness practice is on a mission to help exhausted, inflamed, and overlooked individuals finally get answers, feel better, and thrive from the inside out.

We specialize in chronic gut issues (bloating, constipation, diarrhea, IBS, SIBO), autoimmune conditions, and sustainable weight loss that actually sticks—especially when conventional approaches have failed. Our clients have often tried everything and are tired of being told “your labs are normal” while their body says otherwise.

What makes us different? We blend clinical expertise, with compassionate coaching and a deep understanding of how the body really works. Dr. Tarah’s signature method, The Farma and Flora Method, is a powerful framework that addresses the six essential pillars of health—nutrition, stress, sleep, movement, environment, and joy. Because true healing happens when all of you is supported.

At The Rooted Farmacy, you won’t find band-aids. You’ll find personalized, practical plans that fit your real life—backed by science, delivered with heart.

We offer high-touch 1:1 coaching, transformational healing programs, educational workshops, and a vibrant community of people who are ready to take their power back.

What we’re most proud of? Watching our clients reclaim energy, feel like themselves again, and finally say: “I didn’t know I could feel this good.”

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start healing, you’re in the right place.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t know if I believe in luck. I poured my heart and soul into all the moving pieces that came together through the years, to create The Rooted Farmacy.
As if luck could explain the long nights spent studying functional medicine after tucking in a toddler.
As if luck wrote the emails, coached the clients, held space for healing, and built a business during deployments and diaper changes.

Let’s be clear: this wasn’t luck. (Unless you include finding an amazing husband that supports all my wild dreams, then yes. I got lucky).
This was listening to a soul whisper that wouldn’t quiet down. This was grit wrapped in intention.
This was science-meets-spirit, showing up with heart in a world hungry for real answers.

The Rooted Farmacy was born not out of chance, but out of a deep calling to do things differently—to guide people back to the root of their health, back to their own intuition, back to what truly heals, back to a vibrant and health life!

So if you’re tempted to call it luck, let me offer a gentler truth:
It was alignment.
It was purpose.
It was relentless devotion to showing up, even when no one was watching.

And that? That’s far more powerful than luck could ever be.
