Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddie Powell.
Hi Maddie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From an early age, I was captivated by the transformative power of design. I would often rearrange my parents’ furniture while they were out, instinctively crafting spaces that felt more inviting, balanced, and artful. What began as childhood curiosity quickly evolved into a lifelong passion for aesthetics—one grounded in a deep appreciation for beauty, simplicity, and authenticity. I cultivated an eye for understated elegance, where every piece has a purpose, and every space tells a quiet, compelling story.
Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design, along with a Minor in Floral Design from Western Kentucky University, allowed me to deepen my understanding of the interplay between nature and structure, emotion and environment. I learned that great design is not just seen—it’s felt. Whether through the soft curve of a petal or the thoughtful placement of a chair, my work seeks to express harmony, warmth, and intention. The same principles that guide my floral arrangements—balance, rhythm, texture—inform the way I envision and create interiors that feel both grounded and ethereal.
At the heart of my creative process is a commitment to authenticity. I draw inspiration from the natural world, from personal memories, and from the quiet beauty found in everyday moments. Each project is a reflection of this ethos—a celebration of subtle charm, lived-in elegance, and the emotional resonance of well-considered design. My journey continues to evolve, driven by a love for crafting environments that are not only visually captivating but deeply human. Through thoughtful design, I invite others to experience the profound joy of artful simplicity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but linear, and certainly not without its challenges. After graduating college, I had the privilege of working alongside a highly celebrated interior designer in Greenville—an experience that was both inspiring and formative. Yet, life has its seasons, and I eventually chose to step away from the studio to tend to some personal matters. During that time, I was bound by a non-compete contract, which made it nearly impossible to continue practicing interior design. It was a difficult pivot, one that tested both my patience and my sense of purpose.
In that quiet in-between, I found myself exploring unexpected paths—first as a teacher, then as a cabinet designer. At first glance, these roles may have seemed like detours, but in truth, they were rich with lessons. Teaching helped me sharpen my communication and leadership skills, while designing cabinetry refined my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of spatial functionality. These experiences, though unforeseen, shaped me in invaluable ways, allowing me to return to design with greater clarity, resilience, and perspective.
When the non-compete finally ended, I took a leap and opened my own business. The process has felt much like navigating a winding road—full of blind turns and moments of uncertainty—but also wonder, growth, and connection. Each challenge, each pivot, has carried me to where I am now. And for that, I’m incredibly grateful. The people I’ve met along the way, the opportunities that have unfolded, and the resilience I’ve built—all of it has been instrumental in shaping the creative and professional I am today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an interior designer focused on creating spaces that are as functional and livable as they are beautiful. My work is rooted in a deep appreciation for cohesion—every element in a space should feel like it belongs, contributing to an overall vision that’s both intentional and inviting. I draw inspiration from icons like Sister Parish, Elsie de Wolfe, and Alexa Hampton, as well as the Impressionist art movement, which influences the way I think about light, color, and emotional impact.
I specialize in whole-home design, beginning with a broad conceptual vision and refining it down to the specific needs of each room. This ensures every space not only stands on its own but also supports the flow and function of the entire home. My clients know me for blending timeless design with personal storytelling—creating interiors that reflect the lives and values of the people who live in them.
I’m most proud of the way I help clients feel seen and understood throughout the design process. What sets me apart is my commitment to both aesthetics and practicality—I believe beauty should never come at the expense of comfort or functionality. My goal is always to create homes that feel effortlessly elegant, yet deeply personal.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If I could offer one piece of advice to those just beginning their journey, it would be this: put yourself out there. Truly. Step away from the screen, attend local events that speak to your interests, and make space for real, human connection. There’s something powerful about being in the room—sharing conversation, learning from others, and feeling the energy of a creative community. Whether it’s fellow designers, artists, or mentors, those relationships can shape your path in the most unexpected and beautiful ways.
Also, give yourself permission to explore. Let your design voice evolve. Don’t be afraid to try something unconventional or to lean into what feels true to you, even if it doesn’t fit the mold. The world doesn’t need more of the same—it needs your perspective, your vision, your story. When I was first starting out, I wish I had known how freeing it is to let go of comparison and trust in my own point of view. Your style is allowed to grow with you. And often, the most authentic work begins where the rules end.
