Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlese Milford.
Hi Charlese, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Writing has always been my lifelong dream. As a child, I was drawn to storytelling—I could see entire worlds in my head, feel characters come alive, and imagine scenes long before I ever had the words to put them on paper. But back then, there was little to no support or guidance for creative kids like myself. Sadly, I was often told all the reasons why I *couldn’t* be an author, and never given a single reason why I *could*.
Eventually, that dream I held so close began to fade. Without encouragement or direction, it had nowhere to live inside me. And even when self-publishing became more accessible, I was so far removed from my childhood dream that I didn’t realize those doors were now open.
It wasn’t until a close friend asked me to read their manuscript that I felt a familiar fire reignite. That experience pushed me to research, and what I discovered was life-changing—the wealth of resources available for indie authors, the creative freedom, and the power to share your voice without waiting for permission. From there, I began writing again. I am learning myself as an author and finding my way in the literary world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Heck no! The road has definitely had its bumps. One of the biggest struggles—and one I didn’t even recognize at first—was realizing that I couldn’t bring my current version of self into the writing world and expect to thrive. I was a procrastinator, pouring all of my energy into building up other people’s dreams, never truly making time for my own. That mindset led to shortcuts, half-commitments, and a lack of real investment in my craft.
Once I became aware of that, I had to do a full reset. I revamped my approach, created a routine that prioritized my goals, and got intentional about the way I showed up for my creativity. Now that I’m fully locked in, I can honestly say I’m in love with the process and proud of the results.
Of course, like many indie creatives, I still face the common challenges—exposure and marketing. I truly believe the talent is there, but breaking through the noise and reaching a wide enough audience to level up can sometimes feel impossible. Still, I keep showing up, trusting that the right people will find my work at the right time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in writing stories that center my community—stories that place us in roles and situations we don’t often see ourselves in or that are not often showcased, especially in the world of entertainment. Whether it’s suspense, mystery, or even the supernatural, I’m intentional about creating space for us to be seen, heard, and celebrated.
My work is known for sparking those “girl, me too!” moments because the characters and situations are so relatable. I weave little-known facts, cultural gems, and subtle moral lessons into each story, offering readers both entertainment and insight. It’s important to me that my books not only tell a good story but also leave readers with something meaningful to take away.
One of my proudest accomplishments is simply my growth as an author. I’ve evolved so much in how I approach my craft, how I show up for myself, and how I connect with my audience. A close second would be seeing international sales on nearly every one of my books—that moment gave me chills! It reminded me that my stories have the power to travel far beyond where they started, and that’s a blessing I don’t take lightly.
What sets me apart is my purpose. I don’t write just to entertain—I write to represent, to empower, and to preserve pieces of our culture and experience that deserve to be seen. I like to be a voice for those who want to remain silent but still want their stories heard. There’s so much pressure to live up to what society says is right or acceptable, but the truth is, many people live outside those lines. Just because a topic is considered taboo doesn’t mean it isn’t happening—it often just means people are too ashamed or afraid to talk about it. That’s where I come in. I speak the quiet truths, and I write the stories that need to be told.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is truth—living in it, writing it, and encouraging others to own theirs. I’ve learned that truth isn’t always neat or easy, but it’s powerful. I want my words, my presence, and my work to create space for healing, conversation, and connection.
Not all of my books are heavy or emotional—some are fun, bold, wild, or filled with suspense. But even when I’m telling a story that’s humorous or dramatic, there’s always an undercurrent of honesty. I believe that people want to feel seen and heard, and sometimes that happens in unexpected ways—through a fictional plot twist, a bold character, or a situation that makes someone say, “Wow, that’s me.”
As a woman, as a mother, and now as a grandmother, legacy has become even more important to me. I want to show my daughters and grandbabies that it’s never too late to return to your dreams, to create something meaningful, and to stand tall in your truth. I want to be remembered not just for what I wrote, but for how I made people feel—brave, unashamed, and empowered.
