Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Bell
Hi Molly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am from a small town called Salisbury, Connecticut, and I was raised by a single mother artist. I went to The University of tennessee knoxville out of high school, pursuing a business degree. I hoped to make a creative business out of that eventually. Due to financial hardships i had to stop classes. I spent much of this time trying to save up, as well as my family, even seeing my mom have to give up so much of her artistic endeavors because of the financial requirement of not only making, but selling as well. After lots of working, saving, and getting more eager to put my creative side to work. i applied to scad through the connections of my beautiful Grandmother who worked for Vogue magazine for many years: Polly Mellen. I spent 3 years at scad learning all about my art visions, and where i may want to take my creative side, still unsure about what exactly it was i wanted to do. Again, due to financial reasons, i had to pause my SCAD curriculum, finding it impossible to juggle tuition. a full time coarse load, and a job. Feeling lost about how i could possibly find my way now, after what felt like a million failures, I started to evaluate how i would get back on track to saving money again for school. Shortly after, not long after her 100th birthday, my grandmother passed, and it sparked the light in me to do what she has always taught me to do, help people through the obstacles you’ve experienced and lived through. So i started Abstraction Savannah, an event planning business specializing on taking this financial burden away from artists, and giving them the exposure they deserve.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most difficult challenges have always been financials, and i know many of us, artists or not, face this. Being forced to give up my education because of financial boundaries has been extremely frusturating, and always hearing “don’t go in to an art career, it will make no money”. it shouldn’t be that way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
i do not think i’m best known for any of my tangible work. i think i am best known for bringing people together. My mom and grandma have always been the “more the merrier” types, and have taught me when you give to others you will always be rewarded. I work hard to try and make no one feel left out, and reach out when i know people around me are struggling. Whenever i’ve ever met someone new to town, i always invite them wherever i can, as someone who’s moved to two cities and had to make friends all on my own, i know how intimidating it can be. I try to bring that sense of community to everything i do, and i hope to do that with my business.
My business abstraction savannah, will be hosting a fashion show for 5 amazing designers in the area, needing to get their designs seen, and their voices heard. The show will be on August 16th, 2025 in Downtown Savannah. We will also have live music by talented NESS a up and coming artist in the area. Visit our instagram to learn more!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
There’s always someone experiencing something similar. No matter how alone you might feel, you are never the first to experience that problem, and when we come together and share those struggles and find solutions to moving forward, we experience community.
