Inspiring Conversations with Monica Verde of Reclaim Healing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Verde

Hi Monica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in an inner-city of Connecticut. A place filled with poverty, addiction and crime. Although being raised in such toxic environments, I found a way to find hope, resilience and perseverance through it all. I recall the diversity that came with such populations, for example, on the block I lived on, my neighbors consisted of Haitians, Jamaicans, Russians, Portuguese, American, Irish and Arabians. Despite all the negatives that come with inner-cities, it was the different cultures and the way they connected with one another that made it beautiful.

I always had this drive to help people, to teach people and to empower people. I once wanted to be a teacher, before realizing, I didn’t want to be stuck in 4 walls all day, I wanted and needed to do more to reach the world. This passion led me to major in social work for my undergrad and later obtain my masters in social work. The education I received, in addition to, my lived experiences, encompasses me to be a social worker/therapist who celebrates diversity, and empower those who are lost in oppression to not only find their spark, but also their voice. Helping people reclaim their power one therapy session at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey, although a long one, was only difficult because of the barriers around being a first generation American. My parents are from Portugal, and they did an amazing job embedding the Portuguese culture into my life. A first generation individual often carries responsibilities for needing to help parents understand and fill out paperwork. It also comes with this need to navigate through life alone, as there isn’t much time to socialize with the outside world. Survival becomes our way of living.
