Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Jones
Hi Madison, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my page, actually, after having my original one hacked and taken down by Instagram. I had just gotten my current job working with the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce’s social media agency and was out and about all over the city recording content for their social media channels and decided “why not post some of this for yourself?” I mean, I had an entirely new Instagram account I could turn into whatever I wanted – so, I started posting about the places I was going for work, met a few other local creators who helped introduce me into the local content creation scene and the rest is history!
When trying to decide my niche in the local creator scene, I looked at what the other creators were focused on and saw a need for someone who talked more on the hidden gems in the Myrtle Beach area. The smaller businesses need love too, not just the ones who can afford to pay people to come and visit. I wanted to showcase some of my favorite, smaller businesses along with the other businesses I was visiting for work, hence how my page became dedicated to finding the best hotspots and hidden gems in Myrtle Beach.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say getting into content creation is a smooth road. I’ve been doing this for almost three years now and still struggle to get the same invites as some of my close friends in the local scene. I’m very appreciative of the opportunities I get as well as any events my friends get invited to that I can attend as a plus one.
It’s a hard field to break into and it’s all about putting yourself out there and not being afraid to fail and learn from your mistakes. I’m still working on getting my name and my brand out there, it’s slow going sometimes but every invite to a soft opening and ever y plus one invite I get is a step in the correct direction.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in showcasing the best hotspots and hidden gems in the Myrtle Beach area. That includes anything from mom-and-pop spots and hole-in-the-wall locations to the larger tourist attractions – really any and everything! I mostly visit restaurants, coffee shops, and other eateries, but I have also been to a few attractions and events and showcased those on my page as well.
I have an ongoing series where I am trying all of the coffee shops in the area (22 and counting) simply because I love coffee. I also slip in a few trending videos every once in a while as well.
What I’m most proud of is just getting out of my comfort zone and getting more comfortable talking on camera and finding places on my own. I think this content creator sphere can foster competition naturally, but I’m proud of the connections and friendships I’e made and I absolutely wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my friends and fellow creators that have helped me along the way.
I’m also proud of the way I’ve stepped into this world after having to pick myself up from one of the hardest times of my life. I was let go from a previous job in November of 2021 and when they let me go, they cut me down to the lowest version of myself. The owner of the company stripped me of ny confidence I had in my work as a social media manager and. suffered horrible imposter syndrome. I applied for my current job on a whim after six months of unemployment and am so proud of how far I’ve come and all of the growth, personal and professional, I’ve made in the last three years.
I also was able to start my own small social media managing business, Beach Please Media. It’s a lot of work, but when you love what you do, it never really feels like work.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I bring my own spin to content creation. I’m not as polished, but in a lot of ways that makes me approachable. I just like to have fun and I’m not worried about whether something goes viral. At the end of the day, my content is for my enjoyment and if others get something out if it, even better! I treat my page like my own personal vlog and reminder of all the cool opportunities I’ve had.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My ability to persist and never give up on myself has been so important and vital to my page becoming the success it has. I know I still have a long way to go, but my willingness to learn the platform, scroll, pay attention to what is trending and change up my editing styles has brought on my followers. Plus, I’m showcasing fun things to do and great places to eat when you’re in town for vacation, and who doesn’t love a little help when building a vacation itinerary!
