Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianne Petrone
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a video editor and digital content creator originally from New York, freshly living in Charleston, SC. My background is in video production/editing and digital marketing. I found my passion for making videos at the end of my senior year of high school (thanks to my best friend for teaching me how to use iMovie, my life was forever changed that day). After attending James Madison University, initially for Forensic Psychology, I quickly pivoted to Video Production.
In college, I worked for several different startups as well as my university’s Recruitment Marketing Department, filming and editing videos for prospective students. Since graduating, I spent a couple years back in New York, working remotely for a couple marketing agencies and doing freelance photography/videography on the side.
As a remote worker, I value the flexibility in being able to make my own schedule and also live wherever I choose. Since moving to Charleston in the new year, I’ve continued working, while also throwing myself into all that Charleston has to offer in terms of collaboration and networking.
I’m extremely passionate about visual storytelling and the ability to mix sight and sound to create a feeling and impact audiences. Approaching the process intentionally, paying attention to the small details that may go unnoticed, but often make the biggest impact, creating something out of nothing, and leaving an impression on people via a screen – I find to all be very meaningful and powerful.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but what road is, right? It took many years of internships, jobs/job searches, to learn what I like/what I don’t like, how to advocate for myself, and to learn my worth. And I’m definitely still actively learning that on a daily basis.
Working in this field, or really any creative field, can come with a lot of uncertainty, instability, and comparison. I’ve also definitely experienced my fair share of imposter syndrome along the way as a young professional.
As a video editor, there’s so many different avenues you can go down. There’s the film/TV industry route, the music industry route, and the brand/marketing route. I’ve toyed between those three areas a lot, along with the in-house vs. agency route, and the freelance path. Additionally, while I’ve become very accustomed to remote work, I do miss the in-person experience of collaborating with others, and the structure that comes with.
Even though I’ve ultimately landed on the remote brand/marketing agency path, with some freelance on the side, I’m always open to what else is out there. I just want to continue to grow and take on projects that have an even larger reach and, therefore, a greater impact.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I currently work for two production/marketing companies. For one, I’m a Video Editor/Post-Production Lead, responsible for bringing sight and sound together to create a cohesive story that aligns with clients’ objectives. Some of those clients include private schools, non-profit organizations, medical centers, etc. I assemble recorded/supplied footage into finished projects that match the director’s vision and are suitable for broadcasting.
For my second job, I’m a Video Editor/Social Media Manager for a digital marketing company. I edit digital marketing videos for clients’ social media/web presence. Those clients include restaurants, real estate companies, etc. I also brainstorm and execute social media content for the company’s Instagram page, writing captions and scheduling posts.
I specialize in video editing, but I do photography/videography as well. I’d say I’m most known for the way I’m able to craft stories, whether that be in an engagement short-form social video or a longer form narrative-driven video.
In terms of what I’m most proud of, the videos I created for James Madison University were extremely special to me, getting the opportunity to edit videos that prospective students would see, promoting a place that personally impacted me in such positive ways. Especially, fresh off the heels of the pandemic, after being forced back home, I’d felt disconnected from my university. This job allowed me to feel like I made up for that “lost time” and was really part of something again. To produce videos that reach a wide audience was an experience I’d always wanted, and for a place that meant so much to me, I’m forever grateful for that experience.
Bringing artistic visions to life is what fuels everything I do. I see the importance in the small details and approach any project, big or small, with the same care and attention. My goal is always to create content that evokes emotion and leaves a meaningful, lasting impression on those who consume it, and I really believe that always shows.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my attention to detail and intentionality is most important to my success. As a video editor, I believe everything is in the detail. Editing a video is essentially a bunch of small details (timing, music choice, pacing, color, etc.) that work together to create the final product. People who aren’t on that side of the project, don’t see all the time and detail that goes into crafting a story in a seamless way that’s cohesive, engaging, and impactful. I’m always paying attention to the minute details, and making sure every choice I make is intentional. If I don’t have a reason for a decision I’m making, then maybe I shouldn’t be making it. It all serves a purpose, even if the audience can’t see it directly, its impact is there.
