Exploring Life & Business with Ben Holton of South Ground Supply Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Holton

Hi Ben, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up I always enjoyed working outside and operating equipment. Growing up in Lexington I was a member of the FFA and was introduced to the horticultural field. I began working for a greenhouse operation and from there began a lawn care company with my best friend, from that we began South Ground offering landscape, hardscape, and concrete work for the Columbia area. After several years of working for various customers helping them transform their property, a chance came about for us to open up a physical location and in September 2024 we opened up South Ground Supply Company.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being self employed has its ups and its downs but overall it has been great. We are learning to navigate new territory in a retail setting. Our main struggle has been getting our name back out to the public. We want our community to know that we are locally owned once again and are trying hard to recreate that magic family atmosphere that was once here before.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about South Ground Supply Company ?
After several years of building a company with a solid foundation in hardscape, landscape, and concrete work, a door opened for us to open a physical location! Working as a retail garden center, we offer trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, tropicals, hard-goods, soils, fertilizers, and much more. Our goal is to be able to serve our community with all landscape needs, including an in house landscape designer, all plant materials, education, and more. We are locally and family owned once again and we look forward to helping our community transform their property from the ground up!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Ever since I was a little kid, I have also wanted to work outside. Whether that was with tractors or my hands, I knew I wanted to be outside. I was a member of my local FFA chapter in high school, including president my senior year. With the education I gained from being in FFA, I started a business cutting grass with my best friend in high school. From there, it took off and grew to what it is now. I have always been a hard worker and will continue to strive for my best to help people transform their property into their dream.
