Exploring Life & Business with Elinor Poole of King George Lavender

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elinor Poole

Hi Elinor, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
King George is a family owned and operated lavender farm in Barnwell, SC. George Poole grew up on a dairy farm in Central NY and has had a love of animals and the satisfaction of growing his own crops. Elinor has had a love of gardening and horticulture most of her life with a specific love of lavender.

Their two loves have been a perfect match in marriage and helping them realize their dream of opening a lavender farm.

George and Elinor moved to SC from NY in 2016 and purchased an 80 acre farm, since then they have expanded the farm by adding 35 acres this past fall. We are currently growing 8,000 lavender plants.

Over the years we have continued to add to the farm to make if a great place to plan a day trip, learn about lavender or get married. In 2021 we opened the wedding venue that can host both small and large weddings. In 2024 we added Permberley Cottage, a 3 bedroom house on the farm for guests to stay and enjoy the farm. In 2025 we are adding a chapel backdrop, greenhouse and tea gardens. We offer tours, distillation demonstrations and tea parties.

The business is supported by their daughter Jessica, son Nathan, son-in-law Nick, daughter-in-law Jamie and two grand-daughters Ella, Addie and grandson Luke and our wonderful staff & vendors.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We’ve been very blessed to have the opportunity to have our farm and share it with the other. It’s been a learning processes with small and large challenges along the way, from losing plants, learning more about soil testing and the cost of operating a farm can be shocking to say the least. With all that said we wouldn’t change it for anything.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We specialize in naturally grown english, french and spanish lavender that is grown, harvested, distilled and packaged on the farm. We produce all natural lavender product with the lavender essential oil and lavender water from our plants. We provide tours of the farm and allow folks near and farm to pick our lavender right from the fields. Over the years we’ve also added a wedding venue, lodging, greenhouse as well as tea and herb gardens for everyone to enjoy.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
That growing a lavender business is a lot of work that can be filled with challenges but we’ve learned that patience, being willing to learn from mistakes and enjoying what you do will help you overcome any obstacle.
