Meet Luke Depolo of Charleston, SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Depolo

Hi Luke , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey as an artist began about two years ago, but the roots go much deeper. Growing up, my mom was always a source of artistic inspiration for me. I always appreciated doing crafts with her growing up. My dad on the other hand, a true intellect, inspired me to understand the history of the arts. Both aided me in reaching where I’m at today whether they know it or not. I started using oil paints right out the gate and I never looked back. I study the masters intensively such as John Singer Sargent, Odd Nerdrum, Rembrandt and Edgar Payne. This has helped me grow as an artist as I am self taught which is a challenge. I also use charcoal as a medium to do my portraits which is an expressive medium such as oils so they pair well in my studies and ensure I don’t get burnt out of one or the other. Since I didn’t go to art school a lot of things I am having to learn through trial and error, especially on the marketing side of things. I tell myself that as long as I keep creating things will fall into place.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As far as struggles, the biggest thing is understanding how to properly market my art and connect with other artists. I have been making progress here in Charleston involving myself in different guilds and participating in events such as Redux’s annual art auction, as well as their upcoming Spring Art Market at the end of March. This is something that I am learning and only getting better at. I feel as long as I keep putting myself out there it will all fall into place.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an oil painter as well as a charcoal artist. I paint mainly portraits and landscapes, sometimes I like to venture out and paint flowers or random objects around my house. As for charcoal, I strictly draw portraits with this medium as it helps me translate to my oil paintings. Although the two mediums may seem different, they are closely related in my practice. I think what sets me apart from others is my developing style of using inspiration from the old masters and putting a modern twist on my work to appeal to the collectors of today.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is being happy. I love what I do and that’s all that matters
