Melvin Edmonds Jr. is an American singer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur, recognized for his contributions to the music industry and his role as the CEO and founder of the independent record label, Edmonds Music Inc. Born into a musically gifted family, he is the son of the late Melvin Edmonds Sr., a member of the renowned R&B group After 7, and the nephew of the legendary musician and producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.
Growing up in such an environment, Melvin Edmonds Jr. was naturally inclined toward music. He honed his skills in singing, songwriting, production, and engineering, drawing inspiration and mentorship from his father and uncle. In December 2022, he channeled his passion and expertise into establishing Edmonds Music Inc., an independent record label and artist management company he founded with his wife, Briana “BrooklynBabyBri” Edmonds.
In addition to his entrepreneurial endeavors, Melvin Edmonds Jr. continues to create and produce music. He has collaborated with artists like Nyk Alexzander to revitalize classic genres such as New Jack Swing, infusing them with contemporary elements to appeal to modern audiences.
Through his work, Melvin Edmonds Jr. honors his family’s musical legacy while forging his own path in the industry, dedicated to nurturing emerging talent and contributing to the evolution of music.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to success was never easy, but it has to be done. Succeeding for you means doing what you love and loving what you do. I’ve been down the road where I was finding myself in artistry, and I might have had bad negotiations and dealt with the wrong company. I overcame that by staying true to myself, my career, my lane, and my own path, never depending on anyone to be “put on” or to receive a handout like others tend to do, no matter whom I’m related to. Paving my own lane has put me, my wife, and team in positions that money can’t buy: great connections, brand deals, recognition, and a supportive community.

My name is Melvin Edmonds JR, I was born into a legacy of music, and from an early age, I knew it was my calling. As the son of the late Melvin Edmonds Sr., a founding member of the legendary R&B group After 7, and the nephew of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, music runs deep in my veins. Growing up, I was surrounded by soul-stirring melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and the kind of artistry that could move people. Watching my father and uncle build their careers in the industry inspired me to carve my own path while honoring the family name.
In December 2022, I took a major step toward that vision by founding Edmonds Music Inc., an independent record label and artist management company. My goal was simple—create a platform where artists could thrive on their own terms while benefiting from the wisdom and industry connections my family has cultivated over the years. I wanted to build a space where authenticity is celebrated and where talent is nurtured without the pressures that often come with the mainstream music industry.
Beyond running my company, I’m also a recording artist, songwriter, and producer. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside talented individuals, including producer Nyk Alexzander, to bring back the classic vibes of New Jack Swing, blending it with fresh, modern sounds. Songs like “Chill with Me” and “Play” are just the beginning of my mission to revive and reinvent a genre that has deeply influenced my artistry.
Family is at the heart of everything I do, and I’m grateful to have my wife, Briana Edmonds, by my side. As the granddaughter of the legendary James Brown, she understands the weight of a musical legacy, and together, we’re building something that will stand the test of time. In addition to her role as co-founder and entertainment executive of Edmonds Music Inc., she is also the CEO and founder of Edmonds Media Empire and a 3X Award Winning Celebrity Journalist & Public Relations Specialist— Edmonds Media Empire.
Through my music, my business, and my passion for artist development, I’m committed to keeping the spirit of R&B and soul alive. My journey is about more than just making music—it’s about creating opportunities, honoring my roots, and inspiring the next generation. I’m just getting started, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising I would mention is that I’m an introvert. Even though we’re known publicly, I’m very selective when it comes to my vibration. Not everyone vibrates at a higher frequency, so I choose to only surround myself with like-minded individuals.
