Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Beran
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a passionate dance educator, entrepreneur, and mentor who has dedicated the past 22 years to empowering young dancers. I began dancing at the age of three and earned a degree in Dance in 1996 from The University of South Carolins, I defied expectations and built Dance Moves of Charleston, a thriving, non-competitive studio that nurtures confidence, discipline, and artistry. My studio provides a space where young women can develop self-esteem, learn the value of hard work, and connect with their community beyond a screen.
Growing up, I understood the importance of perseverance. As a single mother for the past 10 years of now two teenagers, I have balanced entrepreneurship, leadership, and parenting while managing a team of over 25 employees. I strive to be a role model for my children, my staff, and my students, proving that passion and dedication can turn any dream into reality.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a dance studio comes with countless challenges, from managing staff and balancing finances to staying relevant in an ever-changing industry. The biggest challenge to date was the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced me to completely rethink my business model to keep my studio alive. Navigating shutdowns, virtual classes, and financial uncertainty pushed me to adapt quickly, proving my resilience as a business owner. Along the way, I have made mistakes—some small, some costly—but each one has been a lesson that helped me grow alongside my brand. Through every struggle, I have remained committed to her mission: creating a space where young dancers can thrive, no matter the obstacles.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the owner and director of Dance Moves of Charleston, a non-competitive, body-positive dance studio that has been shaping young dancers for over 22 years. My work is deeply rooted in creating a nurturing and empowering environment where students of all ages can build confidence, discipline, and artistry through dance. Unlike traditional studios that focus on competition, I prioritize dance education, mentorship, and personal growth, ensuring that every dancer—regardless of body type or background—feels valued and supported whether they take a pre-professional or recreational path; Dance Moves of Charleston has something for everyone.
We are known for our strong Modern Dance program. I specialize in fostering self-confidence and self-esteem in young women through movement, mentorship, and leadership training.
My Youth Company is designed to elevate expectations in the classroom, instilling responsibility, discipline, and the skills needed for a future in dance or any career path they choose, as well as giving them plenty of performance opportunities outside of the competitive world of dance. Beyond the studio, I also coach women in creating lives and businesses that align with their passions, using my own journey as inspiration.
What I’m most proud of is the community I’ve built—not just within my studio but among the dancers, families, and staff who have grown with me over the years. Seeing my former students pursue careers in dance, leadership, and beyond is the greatest reward.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to inclusion, mentorship, and personal growth while maintaining a strong foundation of dance technique and skills without competition, which can many times lead dancers to feel the opposite. I know firsthand what it’s like to be told that success in dance isn’t possible, and I’ve spent my career proving otherwise. I believe that dance should be for everyone, and my studio is a place where dreams are encouraged, and confidence is built—one step at a time.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Collaboration is at the heart of what I do, and I love connecting with others who share a passion for movement, mentorship, and community engagement. There are several ways to collaborate with me and Dance Moves of Charleston:
Community Partnerships – We are always looking to partner with local businesses, schools, and organizations that align with our mission of empowering young dancers and fostering confidence through movement. Whether it’s hosting workshops, joint events, or outreach programs, I believe in the power of collaboration to uplift our community.
Studio Space Rentals – Our studio is available for rent to instructors of other movement-based disciplines, such as yoga, Pilates, and wellness classes. We welcome like-minded educators who want to share their expertise in a supportive and professional space.
Speaking & Mentorship – I am passionate about mentoring young women, fellow entrepreneurs, and dance educators. If you’re looking for a speaker, mentor, or business coach, I’m always happy to share my experiences and insights.
Reaching Out – The best way to collaborate is by connecting through email or social media. I’m always open to new ideas and partnerships that align with my mission of empowering and inspiring through dance.
