Check Out Emily Sutherland’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Sutherland

Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I became licensed in 2014 through Swofford Career Center and began working in a salon a week after I graduated high school. 11 years later i still love doing hair just as much as when I set out to get my license at just 17 years old. Over the years Ive focused my career in lived in natural colors and blonding, my favorite things to do include layered haircuts, grey blending and foil work. In 2023 i went into booth renting and became a business owner. Emily Sutherland Hair is operated out of the cutest little salon in downtown Greer called Shear Faith Style Studio, owned by one of the most amazing people I know Nikki Funk!! Since owning my own business the freedom in my career has skyrocketed!! I absolutely love the girls I work along side and the place I call my 2nd home!! My journey has taught me that no matter what life faces you with if you have enough faith in God and determination in your dreams you can achieve anything. If you are ever in the Greer area and see the salon with the hot pink punch buggy in the window, I would love to have you in my chair and as apart of my journey in hair!!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Obtaining my license definitely came with its share of challenges but I was determined to overcome them because hair was always the dream!! I was diagnosed with a rare nerve tumor as a teenager which so happened to be growing in my right forearm, the tumor was spread over several tendons and muscles in that area of my arm which caused me to not have any function in 3 of my fingers (middle, ring, and pinky). I needed to have surgery but with that came the risk of losing all function in my arm completely. I was already in my senior year and had put so much work into gaining my license that I decided I wanted to wait until I went to state board before having the surgery. I finished my classes, passed my state boards, gained my license, and went to work in a salon for a few months before I finally decided it was time to do the surgery. God was with me and had a plan for my life and as faith would have it the surgery was completely successful and I walked away with around 97% function of my right arm and hand.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been in the beauty industry for 11 years and I specialize in livid in color and blonding/foiling. I love helping people find the best color pallet for them by educating them on the tones and undertones of their skin, and eye color. My goal is to help anyone who sits in my chair achieve a hair color that brings out their natural beauty, and makes them feel like their best self!!

How do you think about happiness?
As much as I love being behind the chair, anyone who knows me knows my happy place is at home with my husband and my animals. I am known around the salon for being the mom to 6 dogs, 3 cats, and 7 chickens!! Me and my husband James have been together for 3 years and he is my absolute best friend!! Our animals range from our biggest girl Xena who is a 130 pound Great Dane, to the smallest member of the family,Peach, my serama mini hen weighing in at just 14 ounces. My home is my happy place because that is where all the things I love are, it’s a place that feels peaceful to me. I love sitting in my Garden with my chickens, being in the kitchen learning how to make homemade foods, or sitting out on the porch swing with my husband in the evenings. I live a very simple life and appreciate all things old fashioned. My biggest goal in life is to have more land one day and become more of a homesteader, to have even more animals and a much bigger garden!! To me nothing makes me happier than just being at home with the ones I love!!
