Check Out Hilarie Lambert’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilarie Lambert

Hi Hilarie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started off as a graphic designer/illustrator in Rochester, NY. I was Art Director at a major corporation Paychex before moving to Charleston, SC, where I started painting in oils and pastels. I participated in the Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition for 18 day (this is an outdoor show lasting 17 days). My client list grew, I worked fr months on the pieces for the show and got better every year. I also participate in The South Eastern Wildlife Exhibition I Charleston which I take advantage of researching and painting the wildlife of the coast.
I moved to Greenville in September and look forward to exploring the landscape here for new material.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
That’s an interesting question. Being an artist is rarely a smooth road and we all struggle with creating work that we love, and then hoping the the potential buyers will like it too. I paint what I love and cross my fingers others will like it too. Kind of the “if I build it, they will come” philosophy. The struggle comes from within the studio, to always push yourself to create what you love, and I have been extremely lucky to have it resonate with people. I am always pushing myself in both technique and subject manner.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In one way I think I was very fortunate to have a business career before being a painter. As a graphic designer I had to take what a group of people wanted, create and image that would satisfy them and get the point across. I learned to respect the opinion of others but make something that was inspiring. I was taught the marketing aspect that eventually proved advantageous working on commissions with clients. It also helped me on the management of my business.
I think what has set me apart is the approach I take to my work. I started off in pastels and like that color is laid over color and my oil work shows that. I like linear lines but broad brushstrokes. I think a lot f my work is whimsical also: old typewriters, classic toys, still lives of grits and milk, lunchpail, etc. My goal is to speak to people and have them have a connection to the piece.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m very fond of commissions and enjoy working with clients, I also like to “get out of the box” so welcome any collaboration ideas.
