Conversations with Sabrina Fields

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Fields

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Photography wasn’t necessarily on my radar growing up. I dreamed of becoming an astronaut and held onto that dream through college as I studied Mechanical Engineering and worked at Delta Airlines in the Propulsion Engineering department as a co-op student. However, through college, I was also the girl with the camera! I ended up changing my major and graduating with a French degree, moved to Belgium for a semester and taught English while working with some missionaries in a small church.
While there, I began dreaming more of photography, but it would still be several years before I figured out how to pursue photography without going back to school. Thankfully, this was the time blogs began to take off and others started sharing what they knew a little more freely. In 2009, I went to France for a National Geographic Photography Workshop and I credit that to the beginning of my photography career!
During that year I had helped a friend photograph a couple of weddings and began falling in love with them. In 2010, I began booking and shooting weddings myself. Currently, I still adore serving couples on their wedding days (whether it’s a grand celebration or an intimate elopement) and meeting up with them again as they begin to have children! Fresh48 and at-home newborn sessions are also favorites of mine to capture.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has most definitely not been a smooth road. Learning to run a business has probably been the bumpiest part of this ride – and I’m still learning a lot! When I was dating the guy who is now my husband, he came over one day to find me in the middle of my living room, surrounded by receipts! It was a disaster. But he helped me get out of running my business from my checkbook to getting an official business license and putting my finances into a spreadsheet. We’ve come such a long way since that day in my living room!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
These days, I mostly photograph weddings and newborns. However, travel photography is still a favorite since I took that trip to France with National Geographic! France has become my “go-to” place for inspiration and one of my biggest goals is to photograph a wedding there – whether it’s an intimate ceremony or a grand celebration!
After studying engineering for 4 years, my foundation for problem solving and expecting the unexpected have helped me remain calm when things might not go according to plan. Which is likely to happen on a wedding day or with a newborn!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The “walk in love.” podcast is more for the personal side of my life, but without my faith and trust in Jesus, nothing else would make sense. So, when they talk of their faith, marriage, family, and business, it’s from a similar place that I’m coming from and that’s been a huge encouragement over the years. A couple of other photographers have helped my business take shape over the years too, mainly Katelyn James Photography (who I found back in 2008 before I even owned my own digital camera!) and Abby Grace Photography who has really dived into helping other creatives better understand the business side of their businesses in the last several years.
