Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashonda Crosby
Hi Lashonda , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
WGCD first was established on July 18, 1948. Since then it has taken many twist, turns and platforms. Going from 1490am to 104.5fm has been one of its MAJOR turning and growth points. Myself Lashonda Crosby was contacted to rebrand the Radio Station in May of 2022, not knowing anything about the concepts of radio etc. I left out of the meeting with the opportunity of being a Mid-day personality. I jumped at the opportunity and ensured to involve my family as mush as possible. Fast forward to December 2022, I was offered the position of Station Manager by the General Manager Mr. Earl Moore of Chester, SC. Effective January 2023, I became manager and immediately was eager to expand WGCD into the community to see how we should connect and collaborate with local organizations, individuals and businesses. I knew the task would be hard, but I was willing to mend the broken relationships and to create NEW relationships. In October of 2023, my husband and I was informed from the owner of the Radio Station that he was going to demolish the building and sale the ‘service signal’. At the time we were not prepared for such a MAJOR investment and decision. However, if we did not agree, the City of Chester would no longer have a local radio station, which for us was going to be heartbreaking. We prayed about it and on November 17, 2023 we (CBC Media Group, LLC) officially became the NEW owners. This was extremely scary as we were thrown in uncharted territory. We continued to do what we knew how to do best and that is be present for the community by highlighting and spotlighting both individuals and businesses.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road at all, some were not comfortable with the changing of ownership. Many were not willing to see the vision that my husband and I wanted for the *NEW* WGCD. It was very challenging to find individuals who were willing to do the “heavy lifting” to see the ultimate success of the Radio Station. We experienced vandalism of our building, not so favorable rumors being spread and even some individuals refusing to advertise with us. It was very disheartening, however, we thoroughly and whole-heartedly appreciate those businesses and individuals that support us unconditionally.

WGCD 104.5FM is located in the GREAT City of Chester, SC. We are a local radio station that cares about the success of small businesses and free lancers. My family is considered to be the only black owned family Radio Station in SC and our daughter is considered to be America’s Youngest Radio Broadcaster. We are HUGE supporters of the community and we use our platform to ensure that the voices of others can be heard. We specialize in Radio Advertisements and Digital works as it relates to social media concepts, etc. We are known most for our ability to be EVERYWHERE! Whether it is conducting on site interviews, photography or videography, WGCD has been known to be the focal point of many events throughout Chester and the surrounding areas. What sets us apart from others is our ability to not only offer Radio Advertisements, but to offer visual Ads on our Roku TV and Amazon Fire TV apps and other branding mechanisms. Brand wise we are most proud of being able to see the community succeed through our advertisements and being able to place their business or product at the forefront. What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
There is NEVER going to be a perfect City. We feel as though we have to take the GOOD with the BAD and focus on what is important and that is ensuring to highlight the positivity within the community. We ALWAYS receive GREAT feedback from community organizers, citizens and local government as a whole.
