Today we’d like to introduce you to Lana Brewster
Hi Lana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started back in 2021 when I was a single mom of three, juggling a full-time job but barely making ends meet. I knew I needed to do better for my kids, but without extra funds, my options felt limited. That’s when I decided to turn my passion into a side hustle—photography.
I had always loved capturing special moments, and working with other families brought me real joy. At first, I bought a basic camera and took photos for friends at low rates, just trying to build my portfolio. Late nights were spent editing, and weekends were packed with shoots, but I felt something I hadn’t in a long time—hope.
As word spread, my small business grew. By 2023, I was booking small weddings, maternity shoots, and family portraits regularly. It wasn’t just about the money anymore; it was about creating something meaningful for myself and my children. Photography gave me financial freedom, but more importantly, it showed my kids that hard work and passion could change our lives.
Now, looking back, I see how that one decision in 2021 transformed everything. I went from barely surviving to thriving—one photo at a time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were plenty of struggles along the way. In the beginning, the biggest challenge was money—I couldn’t afford expensive equipment, so I had to make do with a basic camera and free editing software. I also didn’t have a dedicated space to work, so I’d be editing photos late at night at the kitchen table after putting my kids to bed.
Balancing everything was another major hurdle. Between my full-time job, raising three kids, and trying to build my photography business, I was constantly exhausted. There were days when I questioned whether I was doing the right thing—especially when I had to miss out on time with my kids to work extra shoots.
Then came the challenge of getting clients. At first, people were hesitant to pay for my services since I was new to the business. I had to offer discounted sessions just to build a portfolio. Social media was overwhelming, and I struggled to market myself while also learning the business side of things—taxes, contracts, and managing bookings.
And of course, self-doubt crept in. There were times when I compared myself to other photographers who had years of experience and better equipment. I wondered if I’d ever be good enough to make this a real career.
But despite the struggles, I kept pushing forward. Every challenge taught me something—how to budget for better equipment, how to manage my time, how to believe in myself. And in the end, every late night, every sacrifice, and every setback made the success even sweeter.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in family and portrait photography, capturing the real, raw, and beautiful moments that families share. My passion lies in telling stories through my lens—whether it’s a mother holding her newborn, a couple celebrating their love, or a family laughing together during a golden-hour session. I strive to create timeless images that people can cherish forever.
What sets me apart is my ability to make people feel comfortable in front of the camera. I know that not everyone loves having their photo taken, so I focus on creating a relaxed, fun atmosphere where genuine moments happen naturally. As a single mom, I also deeply understand the importance of preserving family memories, which allows me to connect with my clients on a personal level.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come. I started with little more than a passion and a dream, and now I have a growing business that not only supports my family but also brings joy to others. Seeing my clients light up when they receive their photos, knowing I captured something meaningful for them—that’s what drives me.
My journey has been about more than photography; it’s about resilience, growth, and proving to myself and my kids that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I believe that taking risks is necessary for growth, even when it’s scary. For me, risk-taking has been a mix of faith, calculated decisions, and a willingness to step outside my comfort zone.
One of the biggest risks I took was starting my photography business in the first place. I was a single mom with a full-time job, barely making ends meet, and I didn’t have the luxury of a financial safety net. Investing time and money into something uncertain felt overwhelming, but I knew that if I didn’t take the leap, I’d always wonder, What if?
I’ve learned that risk isn’t about being reckless; it’s about trusting yourself, preparing as much as you can, and then taking the leap despite the fear. Every major step in my journey required some level of risk, but each one also brought new opportunities and growth. I truly believe that sometimes, the biggest rewards come from the chances we’re most afraid to take.
