Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Fountain
Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I sold my first handbag on eBay in 2010 from my college apartment. Over the years I continued to sell some personal items on eBay, but it wasn’t until 2018 that I opened my Poshmark account. I started selling on Poshmark with items from my personal closet, and it was immediately clear that this was a different kind of selling platform because the sales were rolling in! On Instagram, I discovered a whole community of resellers that were brining in full time salaries via Poshmark sales. This gave me the drive to start my own reselling journey. Since graduating college I had several jobs, working in freight and logistics. While working in this field did give me lots of experience, I was absolutely miserable. In 2020 I felt I finally had enough inventory listed and the security of my husband’s job to quit my logistics job and start reselling on Poshmark and eBay full time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a learning experience and still is! Fashion trends are always changing, sales can be slow, and of course I’ve had my share of bad buys/investments. Typically though I can at least get my money back on what I paid for an item, but there have been a handful of incidents where I lost money on a buy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Basically, I turn someone’s trash into someone else’s treasure! I prioritize selling used women’s clothing, shoes and accessories on Poshmark and eBay. From my home office, my goal is to consistently list 6-8 new items every weekday. I have over 800 items listed online with everything inventoried and stored in our garage. On average I ship out 3-4 items daily, with the majority of sales being made on Poshmark.
My favorite ways to source inventory are online, at the thrift store, and through consignment clients. I would love to expand my consignment business, offering clients a 50% payout of the net earnings on a sale. I also have a booth in Rock Hill’s White Street Station, where I’ve started to sell some vintage items. I believe fast fashion has a huge overproduction problem in our society, and that everyone should consider shopping for clothing second hand before buying something new. There is currently enough clothing on our planet to clothe the next 6 generations.
