Meet Danielle Woodson of Spartanburg, SC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Woodson

Hi Danielle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been an artist and felt the need to create since I was a child. I received my BFA in Studio Art in 2004 from Winthrop University with concentrations in metalsmithing, photography, and a minor in art history. A multi-medium artist, I started DC Designs in 2017 as an outlet for my creative pursuits. These have included building and painting custom furniture, upholstery, painting, photography, and most recently stained glass. After working for 13 years designing custom art for model homes, I became the Arts and Outreach Director for the Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg in 2023. In January 2025, I also was guest curator for the Spartanburg Art Museum for the show DISPLACED: The Resilience and Resurgence of Artists Affected by Hurricane Helene.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road – there are bouts where the creativity feels forced and it loses its joy. I think this is why I jump between mediums so often, so I can feel inspired by something new. There are times I make things that sell instantly, and there are times I make things that are total flops. I think that’s a common struggle with artists working to find the balance between creating for the joy of it and creating what you know people will want to purchase so that you can make a living from your work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an artist, I’m known for the ability to learn multiple mediums and to be able to create almost anything. I think one of my strengths has always been being able to get an idea for a creation and letting that vision dictate what medium it’s made from – and if it’s not a medium I’m familiar with, I teach myself or take a class to learn how to work in that medium to be able to fulfill the vision. I feel that sets me apart from others. As far as what I’m most proud of, my favorite piece I’ve made so far is recreating the well known Love Where You Live mural in Spartanburg in stained glass, down to hand painting the lettering and details.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
The street I grew up on in Maryland had several kids close in age, and we would meet up with our bicycles and ride all through the neighborhood for hours. We all had to be home when the street lights came on, and it just seemed like such a carefree and simpler time than the way kids are now.
