Hidden Gems: Meet Kathryn Schmidt of Fit Mommy Charleston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Schmidt

Hi Kathryn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Fit Mommy Charleston has been around for about eight years, but I officially took over at the end of 2024. I first joined Fit Mommy two years ago after my neighbor, who was the owner at the time, invited me to give it a try. At the time, I had two young girls under the age of two, and I felt like something was missing in my life, though I couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was. It turns out, that something was Fit Mommy!

As I became more involved and started attending classes, I found not only physical fitness but also an incredible sense of support and connection with the other women. Fit Mommy became a crucial part of my life, boosting both my physical and mental well-being. It has also been a wonderful experience for my children—they’ve made lasting friendships and have been introduced to outdoor activities and exercise in a positive, fun way.

I have enjoyed fitness for several years and became nationally certified as a personal trainer through NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine). I went from member to one of the trainers and then when ownership of Fit Mommy became an option I jumped at the chance knowing I could be helping other women feel supported and find a sense of community.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have a degree in Marine Biology and previously served as a General Manager at a restaurant before the pandemic. Throughout my adult life, I’ve always struggled to fully know what truly brings me joy and a sense of purpose. However, I finally feel like I’m in the right place in life—as a wife, mother, and now the owner of a business that holds deep personal meaning for me. While there’s still much for me to learn about owning a business, I’m confident in what Fit Mommy Charleston has done for me throughout my motherhood journey. It’s become an integral part of my life, and my mission now is to offer that same support and empowerment to other moms who need it.

We’ve been impressed with Fit Mommy Charleston, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Fit Mommy Charleston is an outdoor exercise community that meets at several locations around the Lowcountry. Currently, we offer weekly classes in Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley, and Daniel Island, with a new class coming to Hanahan in March. We’re all moms and certified trainers, passionate about supporting women at every stage of motherhood. Our members range from pregnant and postpartum moms to seasoned mothers, and we’re well-versed in providing safe modifications for all fitness levels.

We believe in meeting our members where they are, ensuring that every woman feels comfortable and supported in their fitness journey. Children are always welcome at our workouts, and it’s truly heartwarming to see our little ones interact and form the sweetest friendships.

In addition to our weekly classes, we host monthly Moms’ Night Out events where we get to bond in a different setting. Just this evening, we had a great time together at TopGolf! We’ve also introduced weekly mom meetups every Wednesday, where we gather at a local coffee spot and enjoy a walk together. These free events offer an opportunity for moms to connect and build companionship. We also host occasional pop-up and family-friendly events, because we’re all about bringing moms and families together.

The first class is always free so we encourage people to come try us out – you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I haven’t always lived a healthy lifestyle, and exercise wasn’t always a central part of my life. Through the ups and downs of life, I’ve found that things are much easier to navigate when fitness is part of my routine. In the past, I struggled with unhealthy habits like drinking, smoking, and eating poorly. However, I’ve been sober for almost seven years now, and for me, this decision has had a profound impact on both my personal well-being and my family life.

That said, I believe everyone’s journey is different, and sobriety isn’t the only path to health or happiness. For me, it’s been a key part of my growth, and it’s allowed me to be present for my family and lead Fit Mommy Charleston. I’m grateful for my journey, and I hope it encourages other moms to find what works best for them—whether that’s through fitness, support, or whatever makes them feel empowered.
