Rising Stars: Meet Nate Donyel Garrison of Greenville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Donyel Garrison

Hi Nate Donyel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for acting and performing arts began when i was about 12 years old. I was offered my first play back at my home church Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. The name of the play was called “These Nails”, I played a roman soldier who despised Jesus and didn’t believe he was the true messiah, but later repented. From there, it just lit a fire inside that I didn’t know existed. I’ve always been shy because of my disability and how I was looked at viewed throughout my educational journey. I can say, once that “acting bug” bit me I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I’ve performed in a few stageplays since: “Mr. Sleep Around”, “What Lies Beneath”, “A Daughter Scorned”, and my most recent, “Desperate Measures The Sequel”. I’ve done some commercials as well, like “Assebie”, and “Hoover”. After some tine had passed, my wife Desiree told me that i should finally go for creating my own production company. I’ve always had a wild imagination, and love telling stories and writing scripts, just wasn’t given the chance and felt like I was over looked in certain aspects. So then I launched my production company called “The Nate ShowGVL”. Through the ups and downs, I cherish the opportunity I get to tell stories with meaning, faith, love, drama, suspense, and laughter. I’m thankful that I get to partner with other actors and actresses as well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the obstacles I’ve faced was when I was born the doctors told my mother that I would never be able to walk based off of how my feet were. Not to to mention, I also have Nystagmus (uncontrollable eye movement). I always saw myself driving and doing for myself. When I got my learner’s permit, I figured that I would easily accomplish that. Well, life has a way throwing curb balls even when you don’t play baseball. When I completed drivers ED and went to the DMV I didn’t pass their vision test in order to obtain my license. When I visited my eye doctor, I was told that I would never be able to drive. That put me in a sad state, I even had to turn in my learner’s permit. Once I overcame that obstacle with time and after I launched my production company, I was greeted with the responsibility I have for actors and actresses that I work with. I’ve been rejected majority of my life but I wasn’t prepared for how it hurts when you are trying to collaborate with other content creators to tell positive stories. It’s like having the door slammed in your face. Not to mention, I’m funding this business out of my own pockets, and I felt like no one even cared. Having these stories to tell, and being a new up and coming content creator is not always the best combination to have.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m known for being an actor who’s performed few local stageplays. What I’m most proud of is my company The Nate ShowGVL. Our motto is, “Changing the culture with one story at a time”. What sets me apart from everyone else is I’m telling stories from my own perspective. It’s a combination of my life experiences, and my childlike imagination. What I believe I specialize in is simply getting to know people. Making people feel seen.

How do you think about happiness?
One of the things that makes me happy is being on stage performing. Being able to influence the crowd with ranges of emotions. Also writing has became another thing that makes me happy as well.
