Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Shook
Hi Jamie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My children were the catalyst for starting my photography business in 2012. I had a successful corporate career in marketing at the time, but had reached a point that I was losing my desire to continue down that path and also wanted to be more available for my young boys. I decided, at that point, to launch my business and operated it on the side, after work and weekends for a few years before finally being able to leave my corporate career when I got married. My business has evolved over time and honestly, I just jumped in head first and figured everything out as I went. Sure, I made mistakes but those mistakes helped me learn quickly and over time, I have grown to a point that I have won several local and international photography awards and most recently, a best of South Carolina award.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think any small business path is going to have ripples or wrinkles. My biggest struggles along the way, aside from learning and growing in my craft and figuring out all of the ins and outs of running a business, has been believing in myself. You can talk to pretty much any artist, and most will relate to the concept of imposter syndrome or feeling like your work isn’t good enough. The first several years of my business I was not only learning how to be a better, more skilled photographer, but was also learning what my own unique style is. I have come a long way, and while I don’t think I have “arrived” because I always want to continue learning and growing, I do believe I am finally in a place where I feel comfortable with who I am as an artist and business owner, who my ideal client is and the value I bring to the table. I don’t doubt myself as much and have finally come to a place where I can celebrate my wins and feel confident in them.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a custom, full-service photographer. Basically, what this means is that all of my photo sessions are tailored uniquely to my client and I walk with my clients from start to finish providing a white glove style experience. I offer the option of adding on a variety of professional services to your photo session from hair and makeup to wardrobe options and pro styling services. I do both studio sessions and outdoor/natural light and I work with children and families as well as couples and do weddings and events. I also do a lot of brand and commercial photography.
I think what sets me apart from others is the attention to detail and the extra level of service I provide my clients. All of my sessions come with a design consultation and a reveal session and every detail is customized to my client’s unique preferences and vision including what kind of prints, products or wall art they choose. We can also get as creative and out of the box as a client wants to. I have done shoots with fire integrated, smoke, water and much more. I like to say the sky is the limit!

- $50 session fee to book. This gets you in my calendar and starts your custom experience. Everything is is a-la-carte and you only pay for the images you choose to keep and in whatever format you desire (digital, print etc.)
