Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Salerno
Hi Caroline, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Fort Mill, South Carolina, and moved to Columbia for college at the University of South Carolina (Go Gamecocks!). I was absolute in my life and career plan, however, that changed over time. After 2 years and a couple Human Resources internships, I understood the key aspects that I desired to have in my future.
I enjoy meeting people and hearing their stories. A position in recruiting was a great start to learning my true passions. One missing piece to my puzzle was growth. Being goal-oriented and welcoming challenges, I needed opportunities to show my strengths. In my third year of college, professors and open doors led me into sales.
I spent three months living in Spain as an intern for a nonprofit aiding refugees. One particular experience, now funny in retrospect, taught me to have patience and joy through seasons of unknowing. This struggle was homelessness in a foreign country in which I did not know anyone. I started the summer living in a “Harry Potter closet” that I shared with someone else. This was less than adequate, especially considering how much I enjoy my personal space. After a few weeks, there needed to be a change, so I left. Living out of my suitcase, I nannied for a week while still looking for a place to live. By the grace of God, and after a couple more weeks, I was able to secure a comfortable living situation for the last part of my time in Spain. This was the beginning of my career as everyone should have a suitable place to live.
Although it was a difficult and unexpected time in my life, I loved it. Trusting that God has a plan better than I could ever put together myself. I learned about different cultures, became friends with people from all over the world, and grew in my Spanish-speaking skills. My perspective of work and life was altered as I saw the importance of taking the time to enjoy what is around me.
After working in insurance for a little while, I learned that to be successful, I have to believe in the product I’m selling & be passionate about it. I can say that talking about insurance does not excite me. However, there is something special about seeing the dreams of home ownership come to fruition. Therefore, I switched fields and got my South Carolina real estate license.
After graduation, I took a position as a real estate agent at D.R. Horton. Currently, I am involved in a University of South Carolina organization, the Carolina Sales Institute, to provide mentorship and support to students in sales. I want to continue to use this career to give back and build something much greater than just my success. My purpose in this career is to not just sell homes; I aim to encourage the American Dream.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I truly have been so blessed. It is fair to say I have had some challenges and roadblocks, however, everything has led to where I am today, so I would not change a thing. A challenge I currently face in my career is competition. Competition from other real estate agents who have 15+ years of experience and knowledge and a large book of connections. Through marketing, outreach, and networking events I am slowly cultivating relationships and building myself into the real estate agent I desire to be.
I try to view obstacles as learning opportunities and reasons to further trust in God, knowing that He works all things together for His glory and the good of His people. Life is not life without challenges. The chosen reaction to adversity is what matters because that is what determines the outlook and course of life itself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My professional title is New Home Sales Consultant for D.R. Horton in Columbia, SC. In layman’s terms, I am an on-site real estate agent for the largest home builder in the U.S. If you are in the market to buy a new home in the greater Columbia area, I would love to help you!
My top goal in this role is to build relationships and help make an impact, no matter how small, in the lives of those I meet. Buying a home is a big and very personal decision. I want to be sure that everyone who walks in the door feels supported and secure in their home-buying journey. Whether a customer decides to buy a D.R. Horton home or not, I aim to make this a smooth and easy process.
This job allows me to work with people in all stages of life and collaborate with other real estate agents in the area to assist those looking to buy the place they want to call home. I truly enjoy meeting new people, and it brings me joy to play a part in one of the biggest decisions in life. Buying a home can be daunting, especially with all the components that go into the home-buying process. I am always happy to help, from providing foundational resources to follow through after successful move-ins.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Columbia has grown so much over the past few years! I am a big foodie, so I’m always trying different restaurants and keeping up with all the new spots. Fitness is also something I am very passionate about & Columbia has many types of activities to choose from. A couple of my favorites include taking a Pilates class and walking along the canal.
I think the location is the best thing about our city. I can easily drive into Charlotte or take a day trip to Charleston. Since we have UofSC in town, I enjoy attending as many football and basketball games as I am able. I grew up attending these events, and they are not something I could easily give up!
